Question Another unknown noise

For about the last month, there is a noise when I start my truck and put it in reverse while holding the brake. You know if you're waiting for someone to pass behind you or something. There is what I would call a "roar" or "loud vibration". When I start to go it stops. It doesn't happen all the time and when I try to let someone hear it, it won't do it. It happens, at times, whether it is in reverse or drive. I don't know whether it is the brakes, transmission, engine, or what. It sounds like it may be a blower or something too. Has anyone encountered this noise? I have a 97 F150 4X4 4.6L automatic with 68000 miles.

Does it happen only when the engine is cold and goes away soon after?

Sometimes, the clutch fans get "stuck" and make a roaring sound that soon goes away once the "innerds" start working. It would help if you can get somebody to stand on the side of your truck to help pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Better yet, you stand outside while somebody else starts it up.

The only time I have encountered a noise at that point is when I'm on some kind of an incline and I'm lazy about not having my foot into the brake pedal like I should. Mine is definetely a brake noise.

Talking

I heard a blood curdling howl the other morning as I was backing out of the driveway! Turn out just to be the neighbor's cat!

There is a cycling noise that occurs at start-up with anti-lock brake systems. This noise is normal and involves a check of the system. Your owners manual should have more information on this topic.
