Post Leaky slider backlight

I read all the rear window woes, but other than going thru the dealership, is there another recourse? I called Ford Motor Company and they only suggest I go thru the dealer....hate those guys...suppose if I stomped my feet it would help? Any suggestions from those who have had their leaky rear window replaced would help, have had mine resealed twice, now leaking again, more than ever, all this in less than three years...

I'm sorry to hear about of the rear window woes. Fortunately my rear slider is not leaking (knock on wood). But where exactly does the leaking come from? I want to know so I can keep a close eye on mine. Does it leak from the top of the window, the sides, the bottom, all over the place, just the slider window, the whole back window including the two non-sliding pieces of glass, etc? I just want to know where the trouble spots are. Thanks.

Freezer: From reading all the other peoples post of where and also my own leaky slider woes, the leak seems to be in the exact same place for everyone. Directions: When sitting in the drivers seat, turn around and look at the rear window. You have two vertical bars that hold the middle slider in place. Just to the left of the left vertical post, at the top is where it will leak. Kind of inbetween the frame of the truck and the frame of the glass. Some of us even have cracked frames around the glass at this point. If you try sticking you finger up in there, be careful, if it's cracked it can cut you. This is the spot to keep a watch on. The first time I noticed mine, it was just a very minor drip. After having the glass out and replacing the seal, it turned into a down right pour!!

The leak is on the passenger side (right) fixed window, about 3-4" from the locking column of the slider, from the top only. I have had mine sealed twice, each time they only took out the leaking 1/3 window, resealed, and each time it lasted about 7 months before the leak started again. Noticed easily when going thru high power spray car wash, now mine simply leaks with dew on the roof running towards the bed, kind of "funnels" into the rear seat, every drop. Been fighting Ford dealership for a long time, they called in their mediator...and I am still screwed. After less than three years of ownership, 52K miles, they are making me pay $100 of the replacement cost of a new window. I am not taking it back to the place that resealed it twice before, told Ford dealer I NAME THE PLACE this time...awaiting new window to come in. Aftermarket glass is rediculou$! Made for dollars (I should know) and resold as aftermarket for hundreds.
I was told that they are cracking (the plastic frames) because they are tightened TOO TIGHT and the plastic frames are cracking, hence the LEAKING. DUH....service manager at the dealer in Sidney, OH that I will NEVER frequent again was aware of the problems on the 98's and 99's (he said) but not on the 97's (what I have). He even told me they were different shaped windows, which they aren't, they are the same for all years. Just look on the new 250's, wonder why they ditched the plastic frame and went back to the rubber gasket type? No glass edges exposed....hmmmm makes one wonder...
Don't get me wrong, I love my F150, but should have cried the lemon law for all the things I have had gone wrong. I should have listened to the advice, never buy on the first year of a major model change...until all the bugs are worked out! Quality is job 1? Hardly...and customer service sucks at the dealers too.

F150guy: Hope this doesn't make you feel worse but several people here have gone through more than one completly new rear sliders trying to fix the leak. I don't understand why Ford is making you pay part of something that has been ongoing??? If they are replacing with the exact same type of rear window, then it could also develop the same leak. I was out of warrenty when mine started leaking and I too have the cracked frame. After having the glass out and replacing the seal, it still leaked. Yea, I know, through the crack. So I bought a tube of clear sealent (liqued nail brand) and applied to the outside between the frame and the glass. Most people don't notice it. I do, but it doesn't leak and only cost $2.50 So this is just another option for you if you are out of warrenty. Oh, my truck is also a 97

Thanks Tina, I'll keep an eye on it (and my fingers crossed).

I was one of the first on the mailing list to talk about a leaky rear slider. I had a '97 and posted about it in early '97. Probably around March. Many many others on the list had the same problem. The fix at the time was a brand new window assembly. It worked for a year or so, then started leaking again. They resealed it and that lasted until the truck was traded in on a '99.

Well, I really thought I had the leaky slider fixed. But I had to go out as Hurricane Floyd was getting here and guess what showed up. Yep, Leaky Slider!! I've been out since and in the rain but it didn't seem to leak. Guess the truck wanted to get back to the garage.

I just got my 1998 F150 back from the dealership. The rear sliding window starting leaking about a week ago. A fairly constant drip from the spot everyone is talking about. The service manager said its a common problem with the sliding windows. According to the service invoice they replaced the window and frame. I also complained about the mildew smell, told them I wanted a new rear seat. They said "not unless it was stained by the water". They said they used an entire bottle of frebreeze on the back seat. I will be really pissed if this thing starts leaking again in the near future. Overall not to happy with the quality of the truck. It's been in the shop once a month for every month I've owned it. Guess it's time to trade it in on a GMC.

The more I read on about these F150's the more I wish I just had my Saturn again. My rear window is leaking, the paint on three-fourths of my truck is cracking (although Ford agreed to strip it down and repaint the entire truck again). The only thing I haven't seen yet is the door crack. But, of course, since I just wrote that, I wouldn't be surprised if it's there and I just missed it. I am getting very ticked with Ford these days. I haven't had this much trouble with a vehicle since..... well come to think of it, I haven't had this much trouble with a vehicle!

I just replaced my rear slider because of the leak. Ford has recognized this is a problem, has a TSB for it and an updated part. There is now a rubber seal around the entire glass and the unit is built much more solid than the old. I glooped the heck out of the sealing area with the urethane and the new window looks great. The problem was with the design of the window.

Question

To all in this thread, do you have the TSB details, as I am unable to find a reference on NHTSA's site? I have a 1999, but makes no diference as it leaks magnificently and has been 'silly-coned' once already by the trained technicians...
