Unhappy new Leer cap - paint chips

Well the new Leer cap I ordered came in this morning so I went to check it out. Much to my dismay, there are two chips in the paint, about the size of a cigarette head, right where the rear pillar comes down by the rear window. It's pretty obvious that they (either Leer or the shop I ordered it from) tried to touch it up and polish it smooth.

My options: A) Send it back to Leer for a repainting and wait 3-4 weeks or B) take it as is with a $100.00 credit towards the price.

I opted for the $100.00. I figure the cap is fiberglass so rust is not an issue and the chips are small enough so as not to noticeable unless you're standing right behind the bumper. Plus, the $100.00 helps pay for a set of running boards I want to order.

Here is what you should have asked for:

$100
1 Extra set of struts (for the liftgate)
1 Extra liftgate handle (you will need this in time)
1 Free jar of touchup paint.
Free installation
and a pine tree air freshener

'cause it would cost these guys way more than $100 to ship it back to factory, repaint and ship back to you.

Personally, I would have made them send the topper back to Leer in order to be refinished. I had a similar problem with my Glasstite Topper and the dealer was most willing to take care of the problem for me. I also had sent some photos of the defects to the factory customer service representative and he totally agreed that the entire topper be refinished. This is my third topper (the first being a Leer). Frankly, I think the overall quality of most toppers leaves much to be desired. They are charging big bucks for the toppers these days and I think buyers deserve much better quality. I've had problems with leaking windows, paint defects, and hardware with each of my toppers.

CBechtel?

Cbechtel...just wondering, what type of windows did you have the leak problems with? The pop-outs or sliders? When I called to order the cap the owner mentioned that he's seen problems with the pop-outs leaking after a short while. He advised to go with the cap that had sliders, so I did.

Also, I ordered it with the 'top-loader" brackets installed at the factory by Leer. These are the brackets to mount the Yakima or Lund risers and bars. Ever heard of these developing leak problems? Sort of too late now since the cap is in and they are on but just wondering. I suppose I could change my mind and have them send the thing back for a repaint but the thought of waiting another 3-4 weeks kils me...especially since it'll be the middle of winter, snow and all, by the time I get it.

Regards and thx for the info.

Natty, my current topper, a Glasstite, has two small "pop out" windows at the rear. All other windows are "fixed". I had some problems with leakage. However, I was able to adjust the tightness of the small windows (adjusting the latch) and I was able to decrease the amount of leakage. I have had some problems with the front "picture" window (it is the type that does not open). I finally replaced the entire window assembly as I noted the rubber seal was starting to dry out on the original window. The new window and frame had a foam seal around the frame. So far, the new window has not leaked. I guess it is best not to expect "100%" no leakage in a topper. There are just too many areas from where water might leak. I'd stick with your current windows versus sending the topper back to the factory. Too many things can go wrong the second time around, i.e., paint damage, etc.

I got a topper from Leer about a 2 years ago. I bought it as a factory 2nd. They get them in from time to time. It was a $1200 top and I paid $550 installed. It only had a small 2 inch scratch on one side. Leer had touched it up and you could hardley see it unless you looked close. For ya'll who are looking for a top you might want to check with Leer about this.
