Is PaceEdwards cover that bad?
Is PaceEdwards cover that bad?
Was thinking of purchasing a Pace Edwards retractable cover and a PE complaints site popped up that really got me thinking twice about it. Mostly it complaints on the customer service and customers get stuck with it when the cover goes wrong or leaks.

Green,
I've got the PE Roll Top....hardware is top notch and I couldn't be happier...have had it one week now...fit and finish is very nice...local truck shop installed it for me, but it seems simple enough if you wish to do it yourself...

Thanks for the input thefoyboy, did it leak at all in the rain?
One guy had to put duct tapes under the rail each time it rain because his tools was getting wet and rusted out.
One had the black finish coming off in both rails and no guarantee at all.
Found one at tntservice.com for 600.00 but still undecided.
Thanks.

Green Giant,
Could you give me the link for the PE customer service site? Just curious.
I have one on my truck that has been installed for just over 3 years. The rubber is worn out all over the place, and the lock is a bit buggered up. Leaks a little bit in the rain, and a lot when I'm washing the truck.
Some of the paint has come off the rails, but that is mostly due to me scratching it by accident when piling the bed up with stuff.
My uncle had one installed in the last 6 months on his Dakota, and the fit and finish is really nice! And, his doesn't leak. I imagine it will start to in a couple of years.
But, you can't beat the versatility of it!!

Green Giant,
I've power washed my truck now once since the roll top was installed a little more than a week ago and there was no leaking into the bed. I think they have improved the hardware since Jlein had his.
The rear seal is a large rubber strip that butts up against the tailgate. Seals as good as any trunk lid. The sides drain into a tray that feeds the rolltop tray which then drains out of the bed. The only weak point I can see is where the sides rest on the bedcaps themselves. It uses a heavy duty double stick tape with internal clamps and then the weight of the equipment itself on top of that. I have seen no leaking yet, but will keep you informed.
The one thing that pleases me about this system is that no drilling is required.

Foyboy,
You're probably right about it being a little older technology. I just called my local Pace Edwards dealer, and he said to bring my truck down, they'll have a look at it and should be able to replace any worn parts, so that it won't leak anymore.
I'll update you guys after they take a look at it.

JLein,
That is the way to do it. Leverage your power as a consumer to the local outlet dealer. If they want your business again, they'll take care of you and Pace Edwards will too if you give them a call and imply that you are thinking about referring them to a friend, but you seem to be having problems.
Power of the dollars always speaks. Let us know how you make out.

Green Giant,
One other thing you might want to be aware of on this is that it does narrow up the bed opening on the top.
The tracks that the rolltop slides in extend into the bed about 5 inches on either side beyond your bedcap. This is mainly so they get a good seal and secure grip on the rolltop. So basically this will narrow the opening on your bed from the top by about 8 to 10 inches depending on your vehicle.
It sounds like a lot and if you haul some really wide items or think you might in your bed, then you might want to reconsider, but in my opinion you just won't go wrong.....
By the way the Roll-Top does have multiple lock point openings so if you have something in the bed and want to close the top as far as you can, these lock points allow you to do so.

I bought my truck used with only 5k miles and it came with the Pace Edwards roll top cover. The guy who owned it before didn't take very good care of it and now its nothing but trouble! I'm constantly having to adjust it. It leaks and I'm on my third lock! They are a neat idea but they are not very durible! As soon as I can afford to, I'm going to replace it with a soft cover. I sure as heck would never pay the asking price for a new one!
Maniac,
Its not the covers fault. You abuse anything and its likely to fail on you without care. Imagine if you abused a truck without care what would happen to it...failure sooner than later.

I looked at both the PE and Roll-N-Lock covers and ended up with the Roll-N-Lock. I've been very happy with it. One thing I like about the Roll-N-Lock over the PE is being able to open and close the cover without a key. The cover does resuce the size of the bed a bit, but nothing that has made me regret putting it on. As for being water tight, I think ANY rolling bed cover will leak eventually, given enough water. Mine stays very dry, but I didn't have expectation that NO water was going to get in - if you carry stuff that you don't want to get wet, then put it in a plastic bag. I think the RNL has been one of the best options that I've added to my truck.

dtyo,
I'll agree with you there, about the roll top being the best add-on.
You can get a handle for the PE top as well. My local dealer charges about $50.00 to install. But.......I have an old garage door sitting behind my garage at the lake, that has a small T-handle on it. I'm going to attempt to retro-fit it on the PE cover asap. Then it will cost me nothing!

What about sound??
Great info on the rolling tops...
I have been tossing it around for over a year now...
One Question.
Does it rattle on the freeway? Or perhaps over bumps or rough roads?
This is the one complaint that I hear people made in the "past".
No doubt due to poor design or wear?
Thanks...
