Rock Chips
Rock Chips
How do you guys deal with them?
My BFG ATs whip rocks up like no other. The front lip of my rear bumper is covered in chips, the bottom edge of the driver and passenger doors are all chipped up. I got some touch up paint but there is so many and I know there are more to come when I get some MTs.
Does clear 3M tape help at all?

After you've repaired the paint damage (touch-up or Dr. ColorChip http://www.drcolorchip.com/), I would recommend you find an authorized 3M PPF installer and have the film installed. There may or may not be a pattern for the areas you want to cover. If there isn't, the installed will have to make some custom pieces.
It's not cheap, but it will definitely stop the rock chips.

For the actual touchup paint, I find automotivetouchup has the biggest selection of colors, haven't stumped them yet. Prices are beyond fair too. They have an instructional video on the frontpage to show you how easy it actually is.
I don't know what you would use to protect it, maybe a piece of hard plastic that protrudes a bit from the body behind the tired, bolted to the frame. You might have to get a little creative on that.

I got some touch up paint from my work but it doesn't match really. I got the right color so I'm not really sure I want to cover it up yet.
I was just thinking of getting some clear 3M tape and cutting and sticking it myself.

As in adhesive packing tape? That should stay on a good 2-3 weeks...well, part of it anyway. Make sure you get some denatured alcohol to get the adhesive off when the tape starts to come off.
LOL No!! I mean the heavy duty stuff. I would never use packing tape. That wouldn't protect anything

I dont think I would use any tape on a painted surface. If it heats up enough and gets really stuck, you are gonna have alot of problems later on trying to remove it. And are you applying this tape in strips or one solid piece? Just curious
I will let you know how it works

3m makes a clear "stone shield" material that can be applied to a painted surface to protect from rock chips. you will see this on many new & high end vehicles. usually on the front "dog leg" portion of the qtr panels and also on the lower rear portions of doors and fenders.
there are actually mobile installers that will have large rolls of thise material and can cut to fit your applications.
we would do whats called a "clear bra" for vehicles when i lived in Colorado. it would be install anywhere from 10 to 18 inches up on the hood and on the fender tips. normaly ran from $200 - $250 to the consumer. probably another $175 to do a front bumper depending on how the bumper was designed. also you can do this with painted mirror or the inside of painted door handles where your fingernails hit the paint when you open the door.
you could essentially have this material installed on any surface of the vehicle like a chrome bumper or painted surface.
many times mobile tint guys would do this as the install procedure is somewhat similar.
When they first came out they had problems wit the material yellowing with age. but i think they've got it to where it holds up pretty good now.

I found the clear bra stuff. http://www.invisiblecarbras.com/index.htm
Anybody tried it? I may try putting it on the front bumper, but I don't see anything for the rear.
