Question fender flares - HELP

hey guys, i was trying to install the fx4 flares that i got from ebay last friday, and i ran into a few problems..

allright.. i have an stx.. they dont come with any type of flare.. but in the king ranch, lariat, and fx4, they come wiht a flare. the way that those flares are atatched is by clips on the actual side of the flare that goes into holes that are in the body. well since my truck didnt come with these holes, i tried to avoid that process...

i unclipped all the small clips that go in to the holes, and then sat the flare on the side of the truck to see how it would look. then i put one self tapping screw in the bottom where it wraps up under the truck, and one on the bottom of the flare (underside of it) going into the plastic (under the headlights area) to hold the front part.

as i tried to put another screw on the underside of the flare, it would just swirl around on the metal body of the truck.. and not do anything.. i could nto get it to catch. so i tried drilling a hole.. same thing..

so then i got the idea to use 3m two sided tape allll along the side of the flare and use that to hold it to the side of the body of the truck.. well it worked all right for a few mins with the exception that it only held for about 2-3 mins before bowing out, and basically looking like *****.

so i took it off..

my real question is, is there any way u guys can think of, to hold these flares on with out drilling holes in the sides of the body. maybe another way of tape or type of clip.. anything...

please help.. i didnt pay 100 for nothing!

thank you guys

Go to a local body shop and ask if they have part of a roll of tape they will give or sell you cheap. Or you could go to the local paint and body supply shop and buy a roll of the tape they use to do repairs and modifications. I bought some to use on a Benz about six onths ago and it was around $12.00 at a supply house. Good luck.

I wonder if there is a template for the holes? but if you dont want the holes there (cause they arent there now, i wouldnt either) and you sure dont want a tape coming loose while you are driving and them falling off, but i think you said you put some screws in the bottoms? id check autozone or home depot might be a good idea too. ill stop by autozone and ask a buddy of mine what they ahve that is super strong and can hold up well and let you know what i find out. I have an couple of hours to kill between chemistry and lab, autozone in town has to be better than the 45min drive home. .

ok thanks so much fx4..

i reallllly dont want to do the holes in the side.. exspecially on my own.. the dealer.. sure.. but i tried drilling a whole on the under part of the metal of the body, where i could screw in the under side of the flare , but the bit just spun on the metal.. even with pressure.. same thing with the self tapping screw..

i wouldnt mind doing tape.. i just dont want it to look that way!.. lol.

thanks for the help guys

What happened?

I have the same problem, I callled the local dealer and they wont touch it. They offered to paint them for me (off of red Lariat I have green XLT) for $160.00 but that is it. They are scared to do the holes because of liability. And I'm scared to tell them they have no liability. I am thinking of doing it myself. I mounted a factory rear spoiler and mudflaps on a 05 Maxima for a buddy, but he had a template. Does a template exist for this job? Or at least some detailed instructions?

Here's the link on how to install it yourself, but you got to drill. I'm in the same boat like you. My fender flare is still sitting in the storage for more than a year now.

If you go to a good auto body supply shop (some NAPA stores around here have a pretty good selection of body work supplies) ask them what kind of adhesive they would recommend. I would thnk you could alighn it how you like it, mak it with a grease pencil (basically a crayon) and then glue it on with either body seam sealer or maybe even some elblem adhesive. Either one will give you a good lasting bond once they set up. Might need to use some good masking tape to hold the flares in place until the stuff sets up. Ask somebody at a local body supply shop, they should be able to hook you up with a suitable product.--DIY

well i installed my flares today.. i ended up using a 3m heavy duty doublle sided tape on all the clip holders.. ( i popped out all the clips,, and used the bracket they sat in as a place to put the tape).. i also stacked the tape 3 pieces high so that it would be flush with the edge of the flare so that it would grasp the body good.. and also i put 2 screws in on each flare.. one on each end..

honestly.. the tape so far is holding up good, and for the final result, it looks good.. but i dunno if i liek them on there.. its probably me just not used to it being there.. but when i see them on the FX4's.. i almost drule.. they looks good.. but im not sure on mine.. i duno..

but i will get pics up.. and show u..

also, the flares them selves were used and sent to me all dirty, like the guy, he couldnt even take the extra 5 mins to wipre them dust and snad and mud off them.. but anyways.. there really grey.. and was wondering if i rub them down wiht some armoral product that i have that renews like.. rubbery type black stuff. we'll see..
