Question wtf is making this sound????

I have this annoying as hell rattle sound under the back of my '01 screw. I hear it going over a bumpy street. Its not the gas tank, exhaust, or bumper, shocks were replaced, I drilled a hole in my spare tire wall thing & attached the brake fluid delivery line to it loosely so it wouldn't hit the shock, and I've messed with the clip on my brakelines but all that did was f up my front left brake. But what the hell could be making this sound? It sounds like a stone in a can sorta, its hard to explain, I can probably get a sound clip of it if anyone wants me to. My only thought now is the bed bolts, In spring I'll probably end up pulling the liner out & puttig new ones in ( hopefully wont have a rusted throgh bed floor ) But anyways, if anyone can suggest what it could be please post!

Yup, know what you mean man. Is it moisture sensitive (rainy days), as in that's when it is mostly doing it? Sounds like a empty box bieng thrown around in the bed, right? I have yet to figure this one out, over a year. Mine comes and goes, also changes full tank vs empty vs box full vs empty, but not much. One of those things like my engine whistle, gone pretty much for now, when will it return. Crazy haunted trucks.

I think i had the same rattle as you at one point. I was f'in with the speakers and i didn't bolt the seat-back (not the frame), in porperly. I thought it was my thrid door for weeks. It sounded kinda like rapping welding rod on sheet metal.

Wash the gravel out of your frame rails. It's trapped by the gas tank. There might also be some inside your spare tire, so lower it & lube the mechanism/cable while you have it down. The owner's manual tells what lube to use.

Another problem is loose heat shields around the cats. Or if the cats are bad, it could be the material inside rattling around.

not exactly, I hear mine all the time, whenever I am on a street that is a little lumpy i hear it, smooth finished pavement, never hear it. Mine is kinda like a can with a stone in it & you shake it, if that makes sense. But messing with my brakelines I f-d my front left brake up ( calipers is tightening the brake so i'd wasting my pad way & my wheel is covered in brakedust )

well I never unbolted any of my seats or speakers, and I am 99% positive it us under the truck somewhere.

Sounds good, I'll stop by the carwash & hose it down & hope that it works, In this season my truck picks up alot of dirt especially underneith

Yeah I remember reading something about the cats making rattle sounds. Is there any chance that I could get stock news cats from the dealer? ( or insurance pay for it ) by the dealer since the cats are a very important part of the exhaust? I dont plan to have this Supercrew forever so high flow cats isn't worth it on this truck.

You could probably get hi-flow cats cheaper than the dealer if that is the problem. There is a limit on the warranty, can't remember what it is off the top of my head.
Definitely check the heat shields though. I had a loose one once that was repaired by putting on a giant stainless hose clamp. It did have an annoying rattle.

hmm, well if I can get high flow cats for under $200 I'll go for it, and I will need to take them out when I get the next truck ( no way I would let them go lol ) and put the stock 4 cat y pipe setup in this truck.

But anyways, like everything else under my truck, my cats are extreamly rusted out & I'm at 86,000 miles if that helps out any. Wasn't the rust warranty like 100k miles or something?

Does it sound at all like a washer jingling on a bolt?

Not exactly, you know how when a car drives over one of those sewer doors on the street & it makes that womp sound, almost like that, but my best way to describe it is a rock in a tin can & you shake it.

btw, I crawled under a few mins ago, and the heat shields appear to be rock solid.

i had a annoying rattle coming from under my 97 thought it was a exhaust related like a clamp or heat shield. turns out it was my leaf springs the little metal band that goes around them. just one bolt holds it together and it was tight. guess thats the way ford made it. o well just have to turn up the radio.

Do you have a trailer hitch? If so, do you have the drawbar installed in teh receiver? If so, try removing the drawbar from the receiver and see if the noise goes away.
