Question gas tank fills slow

My brother has a 94 f150 with dual tanks. The rear tank will not take gas very fast and he has to put the nozzle on the slowest setting to fill it which takes forever. I had an '81 that was the same way. Anyone know what causes this?
thanks!

An inability of the vapors in the tank to exhaust. As you pump the gas in, the air has to go out. When it can't, the pressure backs up into the filler neck and trips the shut-off in the handle. Try pulling the hose out a bit so more vapors can escape and see if that helps. (i.e. don't stick the nozzle in all the way)

Hi,
I dont know if the 94's had them but all newer cars and trucks have a charcoal canister in the vent line for the gas tank. It is very important NOT to "top off the tank" because gas can get into these canisters clogging and ruining them. If these canisters get clogged it will cause the automatic pumps to shutoff just like GIJoeCam has described.
It also could be an engineering problem, I had a 1995 Mercury Mystique that the filler tube had 2 90 degree turns in it before it reached the tank, and the gas would enter the tank at the lowest point of the tank. It would never take gas fast. That was an engineering problem from Ford.
I think the filler tube in a pickup would be more of a straight shot though.
