painting plastic around back window

Hey guys, i would like to take the plastic piece around the back window off so i can paint it. Any idea on how to do this. Would the back window have to come out, cause it looks like they put on that plastic piece, then the window.

Also, do you think i will have to sand it smooth, or can i just put some thick coats of primer on it to fill in the little dimples to make it smooth? Thanks, any advice on how to do this would be apprieciated.

Looks like most people just tape it off and paint it in place. Black appears to be the color of choice, I'd probably go for the color match to the body.
