Lightbulb Signal Light problem on 99' models

I recently had to take my 99' Lariat into the dealer because the silver backing on the signal mirror was coming off. I found out that Ford has already discontinued the '99 signal mirrors because of this problem and are replacing them with a nicer looking signal mirror. If you are having this problem on a '99 signal mirror, take it in for replacement. They are also replacing the passenger side signal mirror because they don't match now (old style and new style).

I to have a '99 Lariat, and my mirrors are losing the "silvering" on the back. However, I personally like the look of the '99 signal mirrors over the '00. I think I'm going to take it back and request they be replaced with new '99 mirrors and hope those don't have the same problem as mine. But if they try and replace it with '00 mirrors I'll say no.

Both of my signal mirrors clouded up after I had the truck about six months. Ford replaced them three months ago with the same type. They did tell me up front that they didn't know for sure what type signal mirror would come in.
I'm watching these closely. If it happens again I'll be willing to give up on the '99 style mirrors.
One reason I waited was I was worried about the infamous 'Driver's mirror shake'. I didn't have it before and didn't want to get it.
I didn't.

Are the mirrors used by Ford made by Muth? If so will new mirrors orderd from muth or the online store have the problems that you all are referring to? I was going to order a set next week, but if they are going to flake up or cloud up I may have to wait. The mirrors on the 2000 Navigators, Expys, and Lariats are not as good looking as the ones from the previous years IMHO, thay look like a light that was just stuck up there. I think it is going to be cool to have a 2000 with the old style signal mirrors.

I don't know who makes them. For clarification, the only thing being replaced is the actual glass (mirror). The surrounding assembly is not replaced. The class is the same shape, but the lights are easier to see and the class appears to be etched where the light are located. Because this is not a mechanical problem, there is no recall on this. I think the new mirrors are better because the lights show up better and they seem clearer.

Thumbs up

Check out the previous post on this topic: https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000396.html

The mirrors are Muth and the direct replacements appear to have the problems fixed. It was a matter where the glue holding the reflective material is coming off. My original mirrors allowed me to actually see the small lights through the reflective material during the day. With the new ones I see a big difference in that I can hardly see the lights (that is during the day sitting in the drivers seat).

I had mine replaced on my '99 Lariat SC and have had no problems. It was covered under the warranty without question.

The ones in the Online store are the same mirrors. If you have a problem with your dealer I would recommned going directly to muth as they will replace them free of charge, but you will have to put up $200 as a core deposit until you send them back to Muth. They should be easy to replace yourself.

Just a note on the manufaturer. When the Norfolk plant sent me replacements (shakes)the mirrors came from a company called Britax Vision Systems.http://www.britax.com/ And I learned that Ford does know that they have a mirror problem (about two years of shakes)and they are trying to come out with a tougher composite that would prevent the vibration problems. The dealers appear to be in the dark on this one.
