Crazy Idea
Crazy Idea
I presently own a Jeep CJ7, but I am going to sell it and move to an F-150. I am thinking of cutting the roof off of an early 90's F-150. I am then going to turn the original roof into a hard top. I am not going to do a hack job on this, so I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of anything like this so I could have some tips.

I've never personally seen it done, but I remember seeing kits in the 4x4 mags that were along those lines. Basically, you cut off the roof and remove the rear window, leaving the doors and cab pillars alone, and they supplied a replacement top made of smoked plexiglass (all one piece). The removeable replacement top was all transparent, so there was no divider between the roof and rear window, it just transitioned from roof to window in a smooth curve. I have not seen these kits advertised for a long time, they are probably rare these days.
Cutting it in that fashion would be the most practical, I think. You'd have to cut around the rear window if you intended to use the cut-off piece as a removeable top.
You might look at the Shelby Dodge Dakota convertibles for ideas too. The tricky thing is if you decide you want to cut the door frames down, you're on your own trying to figure out window sealing, etc.
