Stock CD and New Unit
I've been wanting to put in a 10-disc changer in addition to my factory player since forever. However, I was told repeatedly by installers that since I want to keep the factory look that the only way is to use an RF modulator. I believe that the sound quality suffers from this setup. Are our trucks' wiring ready for such a setup? Is it even possible to install a new head unit/changer without removing the factory CD player?
Thanks.
Thanks.
I have had a couple RF units...
and have not noticed an appreciable sound quality loss. Heck, with the road noise inherent in all vehicles, it's hard for me to believe you can detect any degradation.
Installation of RF units is a piece of cake: all they do is tee into the antenna lead and broadcast (modulate) into a preset FM frequency. Of course, you'll also need a hot lead for power, and maybe a ground, but that's about it, if memory serves me right.

The factory changer is a 6 disc, and you should be setup for it if you have cd controls on your existing head. It may be possible to use an aftermarket 10 disc changer but you will need and adaptor to match the protocol, or "language" that the radio uses to communicate with the changer. The Ford protocol is specific to the CD changer that they use made by Clarion, or in the case of the Expedition, Alpine.
