Question A Little Help??.....

Calling all Okies! I need some local help, please. I am not new to car audio setups, but have a problem that I can't figure out. I have a pioneer cassette reciever and cd changer combo connected to the stock rear speakers and a California Profile 3600 3channel amp(75w to pioneer 3way front speakers and 150w to CV sub in ported box.)I also have a 1/2farad cap connected to the amp and a small low frq crossover. The problem is there is some kind of a whine/buzz sound when I hook the crossover up to it all. Especially when the engine is running. So for now the crossover is not connected. Is there anybody near Tulsa/Owasso that could help a fellow F150 owner figure this out?

Thanks,
cigarxtc

I'm not local, but if I'm right, you shuldn't need the crossover anyway as their is one built into your amp. I believe its factory set at 150Hz high pass and 75Hz low pass. The noise you are experiencing may be due to ground or engine whine. If the noise increases in pitch when engine RPM, its coming from the alternator. If its a constant noise, then it is probably in the ground wire. Very common in those small low pass only crossovers. I had the same problem with one awhile back. The only way I found to fully cut the noise was to cut out the crossover.

ChuckM,
Thanks for the input. Yes, the amp does have a built in crossover, but I am using the external crossover for the extra db boost. I had this whole setup connected and working fine when the components were sitting under the drivers side seat. Then I wanted to give it a clean and professional look so I built a nice display box to hold them all. The only thing that changed was the addition of the cap and a new ground wire connection. So I guess I will have to try a new grounding point next.

Well, I finally had some nice sunny weather yesterday, so I finished troubleshooting my stereo whining issue. I changed the ground connection from the cab to the frame, and reconnected the crossover. Still got the whining with the engine on, so the only other thing it could have been is the Accel 9000 race plug wires. They must be putting too much noise onto the electrical system when the engine is on. Oh well, guess I won't be using the external crossover anymore. That's ok tho, I did hit 119db with just the amp and single 10 CV sub!!!

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
