Question "CD Hot" Message

Just did my first roadtrip in my new Screw today. Have the premium single-cd head unit without the remote cd changer. I think I was on my third cd when it quit playing and display the message "CD Hot".

My expectation is that, particularly in (almost) winter I should not have to worry about the head-unit 'overheating' after playing 3 cd's.

Is this a common problem? Dealer correctable?

Thanks,

TMEL

TMEL,
Took my first long ride from NC to Snellville GA this weekend and mine did the same "CD HOT" number yours did. It did it 1 time on the way down and 2 times on the way back. This was a 6 hr drive in 35 degree weather. I noticed the warmth before but I`m thinking running the heat in the truck helped to compound the problem. I shut it down for about 10 min and it played them once again. Pulled the trim off from around the radio and noticed a lot of heat build up in there. If there is a dealer fix I would like to know too as this is the first Ford vehicle I`ve owned that had this happen in.
Good news is I got 18 mpg both ways at 70-75 mph which is the best yet.

Unhappy

I just picked up my 99 F150 this morning from the Ford service department. It had the same problem Hot CD. They showed me a statement that the Ford Motor Company has sent out to its dealers to not change out any players because it will not fix the problem and that Ford is trying to find out how to correct the problem. In other words will have to live with this until who knows when.

I had this problem when I bought my truck this summer. After only the first CD I would get the message. I'm in the SoCal Desert area so it gets extremly hot. The word I got was that the single disk players are over amped and under cooled. Plus, the area of the dash they sit in gets no air flow. All this adds up to over heating CD's. If you've ever seen a melted CD in the player you know it's not pretty. This prompted me to get a quality aftermarket player and I haven't had a single problem since.

There is a fix out now. It involves dealer
calling audio hotline and getting a bulletin
# (I don't have it here, but will get it).
Then they have to contact radio repair station, and see if they have the new parts or
exchange units that are updated. It involves
replacing the radio top with one that has a
small fan in it.

Lightbulb

I just recently experienced the same problem with my CD unit. I was driving to Montana and the CD player stopped and said "CD HOT". I was quite shocked to see this. The outside temperature was 15 below, but I was using the heater on the high setting. I suspect that using the heater contributed to the problem. It has been suggested to use the AC to cool down the player, but I find that a little difficult to do when it is below zero outside. Any ideas on a proven fix would be greatly appreciated.

Cool

Thanks for the info from all of you. Mine is still doing the same thing, even while driving through some of the cold and snow we've had in Texas lately.

JOHNSC, thanks for the info. If you come up with the specific Ford info on the head-unit upgrade I'm sure everyone would appreciate your sharing that with us.

Stopped by my Ford dealer this afternoon. Confirmed what I suspected, they really did not / do not have a clue! Looks like 'free-market' information is more valuable than whatever the dealers get.

Thanks to All,

Tom M.

Question

RadioShack sells a 12VDC micro fan, 1 9/16" square (pn 273-240). Are there vent holes anywhere on the audio unit that this fan may be effective? Seams that it would be easy enough to hook-up.

This isn't anything new. The reason it wasn't heard or more often is that prior to 97 Ford didn't put a lot of CD players in pickups. Up in MN it's really frustrating in the winter when you need your heat on all the time. Sometimes I can maybe get through a CD and a half before it kicks out. I'm thinking the fix is going to be adding on a changer.

The single CD JVC in my van does the same thing but with no warning. Has the same kind of design with heater ducts on either side of the radio. One day it just stopped playing. When I popped the face off it was almost too hot to hold. Held it out the window for about ten to twenty seconds(dead of winter ) and it worked fine again. ,,,98
