Question CD Hot???

I was listening to a CD this afternoon and all of the sudden the CD player spit it out. The messege on the screen said CD HOT. I did have the windows down and the AC off and it was quite hot outside. Is this some sort of safety feature so you don't fry your stereo? I've had several CD players in different vehicles but this is the first time something like this has ever happened. This is also the first factory CD player I've ever had. The rest were all aftermarket. I'm going to check the manual when I get home this evening.

ONE,

I've seen this happen and it is just a saftey thing. CD's do get hot when in the player. Add a high ambient temp in the truck and the player can easily overheat. It's good that your radio does that, most don't. I have seen a melted CD in a radio, not a pretty sight.

I myself always mount a very small quiet 12v cooling fan behing the dash (kind of the size to cool a CPU in your computer) pointing at the radio. There really isn't any airflow back there and they do get hot with the amps that drive the speakers.

I have a 2000 XL S/C 4x4 with the factory in-dash single CD player.

After I take a CD out it is very hot. WAY hotter than my home stereo would ever make a disc.

Worst was when I drove out to BC (12 hr drive). The CDs were almost hot enough to burn my hand when I took them out. The deck never said "CD hot" or spit them out on its own though.

I was thinking of taking it in to the dealership to see if that amount of heat is normal. I'm concerned about warping my CDs in there.

Anyone else have an experience like this??

I've never experienced this, but then have not played cd for more than about 1 hr.,but
wife and son said they did on a 2.5 hr. trip.
Cd did not say hot or spit out, but they smelled something burning and took cd out. They said it was very hot. Checked for tsb's
on 01 screw and found none. I was thinking about trying to drill some holes thru to a/c
vents on either side of radio, but haven't tried yet(don't know if I can get a drill in
the hole for the radio).

When I pulled the CD out it DID burn my hand. It was so hot I dropped it and it slid under the seat. The next time I got in the truck (20-30 minutes later) it was working fine. I was already thinking of buying a new head unit anyway. This may just be the extra incentive to do so.

There are some previous threads on this topic -- just search "hot" in this category and you can see a bunch of other posts. You should check them out.

What really bothers me is that many of the replies act as if the "CD Hot" problem is normal. I have never heard of this happening in any other car or truck. Does anyone know if this a Ford- or a F150-only problem?

I had a Sony CD player in my Ranger for two years and never had a problem. I actually used this as an excuse to purchase a new head unit. I was planning to anyway so I just went ahead and did. My new Blaupunkt Houston is so sweet! No problems yet and I've listened to it for over an hour once already. Granted, I'd rather have a CD player shut of or spit the CD out before melting it but is the player supposed to get that hot in the first place?

Sorry if this is a little long, but:
I can be of a little help on this one; I was an installer for 8 years and also a car stereo shop owner for another 6...there are any number of reasons that cause an overheated cd (or tape for you old school fogeys like me) but most often the reason is simply that the motor which spins the disc sits right below the disc (right rear corner of the deck, to be specific). This motor works pretty hard and causes heat, which then rises directly onto the disc. I beleive all cd players have on overheat sensor (can't remember seeing any of them without one) but the sensor is really just a resistor on the circuit board that serves as a self protect mode. It is not uncommon for this resistor to be of the wrong value (wrong size) or for it to go bad, which will keep a deck from even attempting to play; if you;ve ever seen a deck that spits the cd back out without an error message, this is often the problem.

Because the head unit is wrapped fairly tightly by it's case, fans blowing on the unit and venting the a/c onto the deck will have minimal effect. I'm not saying it won't help, but keeping the ambient temperature of the whole unit cooler (keeping the cab of your truck cool in this case) will help. My other vehicle is a Chevy Suburban, and the head unit is surrounded by the a/c vents; the outside of the head unit can be almost too cold to touch but if I play cds for more than six hours straight it will heat up...

Has anyone noticed heat from the 6Cd unit? I've never even opened the center console when it's running -- and there's absolutely NO air getting into that box. I did read something about not using U-Stick-em-on lables cuz they could come off and jamb things up -- with temperatures as hot as you've mentioned - it now makes a lot of sense! Wouldn't think adding a little muffin fan would have cost that much -- especially if they went to all the trouble to monitor and eject.

Cool

Y2K:
I've been using the center console cd changer quite a bit testing the install of a subwoofer/ amp/ and component speakers. Haven't noticed any (excessive) heat buildup after more than 60 mins of playing.
We had a Ford electronics engineer (Tim A) on the audio forums earlier this year who echo'd OnBelay's comments. I would think the in-dash Cd player could build up more heat due to it's enclosed location and proximity to other electronics. I've pulled the center unit in/ out a couple of times (with Expy console and subwoofer install). There seems to be quite a bit of room and open, adjacent space. I couldn't agree with you more re. the fan ... similar to a computer chip. Just my $.02...
