Post Speaker/Amp Help!

I have a new 2001 Ford F-150 with premium sound. It sucks! However, I like the looks of the HU. I would like to know, do you think I could still use the head unit with a 70 x 2 RMS amp along with say Infinity Kappa components for the front or Memphis components. I am leaving the back speakers alone. I am looking for a good sound, no SQ competitions, just a good sound for my truck. Or would a good pair of Polk dx 7 3-ways powered by the amp be just as good a sound as the components. Also, would there be a problem with the built-in amp located in the Ford HU that would conflict with the added amp? I would appreciate the insight.

Thanks!

P. S. Great web page you got there!

Hello-

I have hooked an amp up to mine and there is no problem. the only problem you will run into is that the factory unit does not have pre amp outputs so you will have to get a converter for this, they run between 10 and 20 dollars and are very easy to install, other than that there no reason you cn't use an amp. Hope this helps.

Thumbs up

I too have left the "premium" Ford head unit and added speakers and a 5-channel amp. And like Taz said, you will need the line output converters added. I know the head unit has an amp on it but it's not very powerful. I've added Memphis components up front and 5x7's in the rear along w/a 10"sub. My last truck I had 4 Polk 5x7's. Both trucks sound great but the components do sound better than the 5x7's. Your choice will depend on your ear and budget.

Thanks for the info. Tina, what size components do you have in the front, 5.25? Where can you buy and hear those Memphis speakers? I keep hearing about them.
So you can definately tell the difference between components/amp and coax's/amp.

Do you think a low priced component and amp is as good as a high priced 2-way/3-way coax and amp?

kfarquhar,
I just installed the polk aoido dx3065 componet system (witch is 6.5")in the front door's of my f-150,no cutting was nessary.I would recomand a comp sys over the dx7's..although the dx7's are awsome, with our trucks you need the tweeter out side the door panel to get the highs we all want.If you go with componets you will need to make a plate,I made mine out good quality of 1/4" plywood, this 1/4" will allow 6.5"with no cutting of door, instead of 5.25"witch you would have to make a plate for anyway, hope this helps if you have any questions e-mail me at (linedog@home.com).....see ya and good luck
