Question Double DIN radio Install

I would like to install 2 stacked DIN headunits in place of my factory Expy radio.

Has anyone installed a "stacked" DIN head unit and DIN accessory (eq/cd/changer) into the factory "double DIN" space into '97+ f150/Expy?

If so, where can I find a trim kit to finish it off?

Thanks.

While the face of the radio is double din, the carriage holding the radio is single din. Some people have put one in by customizing it. You might want to do a search on double din topics. Good luck.

JoshLucus did you have to cut into the dash to get it to work?

Thumbs up

hmm well mine went into a 97 f150 x/c i put in the kenwood kdc-d300 single cd player/graphic eq, and krc-307s cassette deck
i really like the way these 2 units look and sound together the imaging and clarity is excellent, each unit is a single separate din but kenwood was really smart, they supply hardware with the eq so that it can be screwed into the din chassis of the tape deck therefore eliminating any chassis hacking, took less than an hour to install and even with the stock trim piece it looks great. i do recommend that you get the wiring harness, i didnt use one and it would have cut my install time in half.

nope sorry no pics yet, waiting for wife to use the rest of the film, and no dash hacking was necessary....what i recommend if you got the time and cash, this is what convinced me. go buy the componets you want and do a test fit, if you dont like it take em back. a friend did this with almost the same components in his f150, he got the cd and the md players. i helped him out but it was just way to easy so i decided to go the same route.

Both units are stacked in the dash.

Question

With further investigation I don't see how you guys got the headunits both in the dash without cutting. I have been installing for 10-11 yrs, so I'm not illiterate when it comes to this stuff. I have a sony cdx-c910 and a pioneer eq9200. If you sit the sony in the opening there isn't enough room to fit the eq in the opening. I would have to cut about 1/4 inch out to get them to fit. And then I would have to mickey rig a mounting bracket to secure them because I couldn't use the cages.Could someone please give me some very good instructions. I even had a stereo shop in town tell me that the opening was a double din opening. I think not!The face of the factory stereo may be double din but the actual chasis and opening are not. It's more like din and a half. Please describe the install?????

Cool

The way it sounds to me is they are using a din radio then a 1/2 din component (EQ or Mini disk)

I know that there is enough room for it but from the sounds of the replys you didn't have to cut anything to make it fit. If I cut the dash I know it will fit. I was just hoping I would not have to do that.

It WILL fit because I have seen it done.
You have to cut the little plastic bracket above the deck.
If you dig through some of the old posts you will find the info on this.

Lightbulb

I have an Eclipse 5041R and Ecilpse 6-band eq for a total of 1.5 DIN shoe-horned in the dash. This was done with a lot of Dremel Tool work and other customization . I CANNOT believe anyone has ever gotten a full 2-DIN in any new F-150 or expy without leaving half of the radio sticking out of the dash due to the wedge shape of the dash or destoying the dash. Show me and I'll believe. I've done quite a few installations and that one would get my attention.
