Post Fine Tuning Frequency Response

Just thought I would share this. I've got an AudioControl EQX equalizer/crossover combo that I use to flaten out the frequency response of my aftermarket audio system. I have been trying to set the EQ by ear and was never satisfied with the results.

I went out and bought a Radio Shack sound level meter and a CD which produced single tones from 40Hz to 20kHz. The CD also had a track with pink noise.

I set all preamp and eq settings to flat, played the pink noise track and set the head unit volume to measure 90dB on the meter. I used this as a reference. Then I played each tone track and recorded each meter reading. Next, I adjusted the EQ accordingly and measured again, adusted again, etc until I got a flat frequency response. The results from using the meter are amazingly better than the results I got by setting the EQ by ear.

The meter and CD cost a total of $45. An real time analyzer (RTA) adjustment at a local audio shop would have cost $35. Plus when I add/change my system, I can whip out the meter and set it up again.

Hope this is useful.

Thumbs up

Sounds great.
I think I'll try it too as I also have problems adjusting my sub xover.
Have you checked out www.sounddomain.com yet?

I do the same thing. Also known as RTA the long way. Much cheaper than a Real Time Analyzer. (Around 1000)

Those interested can find the info @ http://www.angelfire.com/ca/DrOhm/RTA.html
