Hey Jeff!!

Email me your address; if I get it before 5 pm our time today, I can have the unit in the mail to you today. Yep, in less than an hour, I got the new Alpine set up installed this morn. Just walked into the shop, and Stan said, yeah, you're gonna do it today, aren't ya? I said yep, he got his lads right on it, and it is TERRIFIC!! Got the TDA-7653 with the CHA-1214 12 disc changer. Left lotsa room for the amp and sub later on (and probably new speakers front and rear at the same time). The system is surprisingly easy to use, comes with a remote (oh well, I didn't ask for one), has the detachable face, and the install was clean and good looking. You're right, Doc-it's not bad at all, altho the little pocket under the unit is pretty worthless for anything except losing dollar bills down inside.

So anyway, send me your address Jeff, and I'll get it out to ya tonite or tomorrow!

Thumbs up

I may not have said this, but the 99 Premium CD radio will also work with the CD changer. Pressing the CD button switches between the radio CD player and the changer. Enjoy!

I'd like to weigh in on the Factory Head Unit discussion. I've pulled my head unit out and to my suprise, it's not a true double DIN unit, it's shaped like this: (profile)
____
|***\
|*****\
|*******\
|*********-----
|*************|
|*************|
|*************|
---------------

It really sucks that for the number one selling vehicle on the planet, there is not an aftermarket *solution* for a head unit. And by solution, I don't mean tons of crappy plastic bezels/fillers/spacers. You can either install a standard DIN unit with what must be a huge plastic spacer, or make some kind of mods (for the brave?) under the dash for the double DIN-type unit. I can't imagine that the standard DIN unit looks good at all (I'd really like to see doc_ford's picture). Besides, I really like the nice layout, the mute button, and large multi-info-at-once display on the factory CD player. And I'm not willing to trade those features for a unit that doesn't fill the hole right. I do consider myself an audiophile, and I have my trustworthy JBL GTQ200 ready to go should a solution present itself, but so far, I haven't seen anything. I'd like all of you to keep your eyes open for a head unit that fits in and uses the entire face area like the factory unit. I think the manufacturer that comes up with it may just sell a few!

Hi rons!!

I'm with you on about everything you said! And, I was quite surprised and pleased when the new Alpine went in with a pretty nice filler plate that doesn't look at all hokey (except the little slot underneath is kinda worthless, altho I currently have a stack of 4 X 6 photos stuffed in there). I can take a quickie shot of it and post it on my webpage, but don't hold your breath-we've got 9 new arrivals at the house and I haven't been able to spend a lot of time on the computer at all lately.

It really isn't that bad at all. Honest. And, if you read the original post from me, you'll see how much I too was dreading what it would look like.

For the record, Doc does have an EQ below his instead of the slot.

I always thought a true double din would go in the dash of 99 with no modifications. 98 and 97 use din and half models from what i understand. I am not absolutly sure so correct me if any of this info is wrong

Dusty,

I can't imagine that many dogs, my two are enough! Anyway, I'd love to see the pics if you get time. All of us in my (our?) boat (truck? would gobble up any info that we can get toward a good solution to this dilemma. Thank you.

Hi rons!

Actually, the 9 are two weeks old today; we actually have 4 1/2 adults (Gizmo the Papillon only counts for 1/2 of an Aussie adult). The girls (the Aussie girls) and I work a feedlot, running steers and occasionally hauling cattle trailers (the smaller ones) with Big Red. If the girls get REALLY nasty, dirty and smelly (like when we work in the rain), the slider is shut and they are exiled to the bed (with shell) until they get cleaned up. The ol' Ragin' Red Ranger was just flat out getting tired, plus I needed more room and more hauling power. I returned every single Ford survey with "Put the 4.6 mod motor in the Ranger" from the day the 4.6 was introduced. I hear rumours that Ford is actually going to do this in either late 2000/early 2001. But since they didn't listen soon enough, I had to buy the truck that already had the 4.6, and I do love it. But it's noisy due to the windows always being down plus the slider being open all the time, usually with a trailer rattling along behind, so I'm not terribly concerned with it being a concert hall, but do want the good sound. And the Alpine is a good unit, the CD works flawlessly and quietly no matter how rutted the road, and I've grown to really like the remote. It doesn't look hokey like the Grand Am install, and I like the removable faceplate (we tow the Sea Doo's to Lake Mead a lot and Ragin' Red lost three stereos there before I got the one with the removable faceplate).

I don't know for sure when I'll have the pix up, but as soon as I do (or Doc gets his up first-his pix, that is <VBG>) I'll post the address here.
