We do a lot of trail riding and I'd hate for it to go out on us when I need to contact him. How good is the reception with midland and if he went a little cheap on his antennae, would my antennae make up for it if it were one of quality?
NEVER go cheap on the antenna.

The radio is probably just fine. I used to run a Radio Shack model in the early days. (Currently running a Uniden Grant ) At that time Uniden made the circuit boards for them, as the did for many manufacturers and still do for some. The three most important things for reception and transmission are: antenna, ground plane, antenna. Get a good antenna, place it properly (ground plane), and tune it.

These guys have some really good antenna with easy to tune tips.

They also have instructions for tuning it here:

The index to their technical documents, which is very good.

A cheap radio and a good antenna is ALOT better than a good radio and a cheap antenna. The antenna and coax ARE your system. Dont skimp on those 2 items. Uniden makes great CB radios as does Galaxy.
