Cool CB/HAM Install

Hey Everybody,

I am a lucky owner of a 2002 Super Crew 4x4 FX4 with an A.R.E Z-Series camper shell. I have had CB radios in vehicles in the past, but when I bought my 2000 Expedition I was no longer allowed (by the wife) to have one. Since then (several years) I have owned another F-150, and now this Super Crew. I am interested in seeing some of the mounts anybody else has used in their trucks. I have to have a clean install. What radios do you use? all info. thats available will be helpful.

Also I was wondering about the antena mounting. Since I have the camper, I'd love to do a Stealth mount.

ANY and ALL IDEAS WILL BE APPRECIATED!!
Thanks!

I would be interested to see others CB/HAM/Scanner antenna mounts as well. I have a undercover/versacover hard bed cover on my truck, so I cant use the bed as a mount, and I dont want to stick above the roofline too much.

These are the places I was thinking:
1) on the back corner of the bumper, as not to interfere with tonneau cover opering or tailgate coming down. This would also work with camper shells.

2) mount a small whip on the drivers fender as a "mirror" opposite of the factory radio antenna. Maybe like this:

or this:

on a firestik fender mount like this:

to achieve a look like this:

here is an article at the firestick site which shows complete installation of an antenna on a f-350

http://www.firestik.com/Instl-Text/ford174.htm

The other mount type I was thinking was on the side between the box and the cab so that the antenna sticks up just above the cab.

If anyone has done this, please let us know what you used and did.

that's a good idea mounting it by the hood. I have seen the hidden antenna mount too, I think that's where people use one of those am/fm antenna splitters but I'm not too sure it would work great on CB bands, but it would work good for some ham bands I would think. Maybe getting a mobile ant. tuner would work...I'm just not sure. If anybody has used the splitter, how well do they work?

I did some research on those antenna/CB splitters and they are supposed to be horrible! If you transmit on a CB, they can hurt your CB as well...

I have a nice full size wilson 1000 magmount, but it is huge and I wanted to get more into scanning/ham than CB. ther is alot more "action" and friendly conversation on 2 meter ham repeaters than there is on CB.

well...that's what I was afraid of. I have heard that they were not any good, but I just wanted to see if anybody had any used them, and had any luck. I guess even if they had any luck, my luck would make sure it messed something up! That's a good looking mount for the hood area. I like to buy that kind of stuff specifically made for the vehicle. It just makes life soooo much easier when installing. I also was wanting to see some mounting pics of radios and such. I'm attempting to study up to get my ham ticket. That would make for a better looking antenna, and probably a much smaller, and cleaner radio install.

KY,

The fender mount shown above in the previous post is the same mount I run on my 02' 250. I run a 4 ft. Firestik with a quick disconnect mount, which comes in handy for parking garages and car washes.

I run the 4 ft. antennas becuase I get a high SWR with a 3 footer. The high your antenna is above the cab, the better performance you'll get.

This mount has proved reliable to me for ruggedness and good performance. It's also easy to install.

I'll look into that one. I wouldn't mind it at all.....it's the wife that has the last word on that kind of stuff. She's pretty picky about vehicles, but sometimes I can sneak one in on her. I like the look and the purpose of it. I'm still looking for some pics of installs of radios inside the vehicles, and outside...keep the ideas comeing. It's pretty fun!

well....that's a really good idea too.....where did you get that mount? Is it a manufactured mount? Or is it something you fabricated yourself? If it's manufactured, where did you go to get it? Thanks!

I have never heard of antenna/CB splitters causing damage to a CB before???

I cant for the life of me figure out why they would?

Since the FM antenna is rather limited in size, they dont make the best CB antennas in the world. I use the Splitter myself. Havent had any trouble in the 2 years I have owned it?

But you cant get out but a couple miles at best.

Box stock Cobra 22 with weather...Firestick 24" on fender mount matches height and approximate location to factory am/fm antenna on the passenger side. This location and antenna height does not get hammered by car washes, parking garages, etc.

I receive signals from 11-12 miles out on the interstate, can be heard well for 8-9 miles, which is all I need...don't want to be any louder than that...

some great stuff. Keep 'em coming. I guess that the Fender mount is gonna be the best mount for me. I can't put one on the roof due to the sunroof. Any Ham guys try putting a wire under the camper? I really think that'd be neat!

well.....I'm going to try to figure out just what I need to do......it'll be after christmas. I'd like to figure out some kind of remote mount head for my radio. I have an RCI 2950. Does anyone know anything about that Midland radio that has the detatchable face? Can you mount the face away from the unit? Or does it just come off like a CD player face would? If anybody knows, please share. If that one has a true remote head, I'd love to ****** one up.....also does anyone know of a remote mount radio that does side band?
