I don't know much about stereos, but I want to upgrade a little. I came accross a good deal on an Alpine ERE-G180. The price was right (free), so I figured this would be a good place to start.

I don't want or need anything exotic, over the top, or expensive. Just want to improve the sound a bit. I would like to keep the HU with 6disc changer.

Does this unit have any kind of amplification in addition to the EQ features? How much of/ and what kind of an improvement will I get from installing this EQ and replacing all four factory speakers?
If this setup will make an improvement, what type of speakers should I be looking for- 2way, 3way, 4way, etc?

What else will this EQ be able to do for me if I do not plan on installing a subwoofer (not for now anyway)

I have this eq in my truck but I also have all aftermarket equipment. I don't think this eq is much use to you unless you have amplifier or amplifiers, this serves as a crossover to be able to control the sound of your front, rear speakers and subs. The eq itself is not amplified so it will not give you extra power.
