AVN2454 Nav Issues

Hi Guys,

Today I installed the AVN2454 HU. Generally speaking I am pretty happy with the overall sound etc...

One problem I am having is the route guidance is not working. It says proceed to the highlighted route and guidance will start, but never says another word or gives an on screen direction.

One thing I noticed, when I push the nav button it says check speed sensor. I hooked the speed sensor wire on the AVN to the 9 pin (Grey) on the 16 pin connector but it still says check sensor wire.

This is driving me crazy. Does the route guidance have anything to do with the sensor wire? Why is the AVN not working with the ford VSS wire in the audio loom?

Please help!

I talked to my local "authorized" eclipse dealer today and he stated that the VSS in the audio loom will not work with the eclipse nav system.

He wouldn't be any more specific but said he would finish the install for about $60.00.

He couldn't confirm that it would be responsible for the route guidance not working but said that it has all kinds of ramifications in regards to how the unit operates.

Anyone know where (other than the audio loom) I could tap into the VSS?

Thanks!

Think I would pay the $60 and let them finish it, as long as they warranty the install.

The wire can usually be found at the cruise control module.

Boy am I feeling STUPID...

I called the company in Florida that I purchased the unit from. They were extremely helpful.

On the '04-'05 there are two harness that plug into the back of the premium sound system.

I'll call them big and small (16 pin). The small harness doesn't seem to do anything I can figure out. I suspect that it goes somewhere where a CD changer can be installed. It only has five of the sixteen pins being used.

The large harness is the primary harness and pretty much has everything you need on it. The problem is that the Crutchfield harness is missing pins. I didn't realize this until talking to the place I purchased the AVN from. After hooking up the VSS lead to the Gray/Blk wire (go figure) everything is working great.

This is an awsome HU the sound is twice that of the stock HU. Its funny because the guy in Florida basically said that the guy at the stereo shop lied and he was going to charge $60 for five minutes work. Well he was right. Everything is working great.

Anyone that needs help installing a Nav system in a '04-'05 F150 with the center console let me know. I'll post the proceedure I used along with all the part numbers of the items needed shortly.

It also appears that there may be a reverse sensing wire in the factory loom as well. I guess I'll find that out after I install the camera.

All that is left is installing the camera and the SWI-X to get the hand controls working again.

Cheers...

I'm very interested in purchesing the AVN2454 and I had a couple of question if you could answer them for me. First of can you change the background images on it, like take a picture from a cd and place it on the unit itself? Also are the features easy to use? Can you view the NAV while choosing a cd track to listen to at the same time, in other words can it display two pictures side by side? I'm really interested in the AVN2454 but the AVIC has some really nice features that are pulling me towards it. I just don't want a screen to fold in and out. I love the double din. If anyone can give me some advice and help me lean towards one that would be great,

Interesting questions...

As far as I can tell you cannot display side-by-side images, but it will not disrupt whatever audio source is playing while you are using the map feature.

I can tell you I have had factory nav in a couple of vehicles (Acura, Escalade) and the AVN2454 is a far better Nav system.

Also the audio quality it high. It does not come with a remote but I can't imagine one would cost over $50.

This is a really clean install you can see pictures of another install here:

See link below. Cut and paste it if it doesn't open correctly.

His pictures are identical to my install and its a good thread to read.

Keep in mind this is an all-in-one unit. There are no modules or anything to run wires for other than the NAV antenna.

This is a great system and it looks factory installed when finished.

Install

It's pretty basic.

Parts needed:

Double Din install kit - Circuit City
Harness - Crutchfield
SWI-X - You will need to buy the optional remote to program this (this is to make the steering controls work).

The woodgrain front on the 150 center console will pull out. I started at the bottom near the ashtray and worked up. The first time I pulled it off it was difficult. I needed to reach behind and bend the lower tabs in a little to get it started.

Install the double-din kit and harness. I can't remember the wire color for the VSS (you must hook this up for the unit to work correctly). I think it is the gray/blk wire on the main harness but I could have this wrong. Do a search, the wire color is standard ford vss wire color. The crutchfield harness I purchased didn't have this wire punched in so I just used a wire clip-connector and attached the VSS before the new harness. Ground the parking brake wire to enable the unit while driving. Run the gps antenna. I just ran in up the black trim on the outside of the winshield. If your careful you can pry it slightly and tuck the wire under without removing the trim. It is hard to get back on if you pull it off.

Again, this is a very simple install. Other than running the antenna, all the wires needed are in the existing Ford factory harness. Please write back if you have more questions. Sorry I couldn't be more specific with part numbers but it has been a while since I did the install.

I am confident you will be very happy!

thanks kacrawford for the reply. one last question, for the reverse wire, is there a tap somewhere in the harness or did you have to run that to the rear reverse lights?

thanks again... i really appreciate the help.

There probably is a wire somewhere in the loom, however I just ran wires from the back because I had to run the camera wire anyhow...

I completed my install last night with the exception of the reverse cable. I'll probably run it to the rear lights when i get my backup camera. Unit is awesome so far. my only slight little gripe is that it doesn't sit flush with the dash. I tried mounting it flush but the unit wouldn't open. thanks again - i love this thing
