No it's not, I'll cost more to put an 8-track system in than a CD changer, not to mention it has to go in the bed to fit..

XM is partly owned by GM!

GM is part owner/investor in XM. For that reason alone Ford fanatics should shy away from them.

Another investor is Clear Channel, the killer of interesting radio. If XM gets hot and Clear Channel starts calling the programming shots get ready for hours of Fleetwood Mac, Barry Manilow and Shania Twain.

One other thing. I think both services say they need a couple of million subscribers to make money. In a country of a 275 million people, at least, both of them out to find enough subscribers to make it happen.

Personally I love my Sirius. I was there almost at the beginning. I love not having commercials AT ALL. ZILCH. NADA. Even if I paid it month by month it would be well worth the extra 3 bucks for no commercials

Hey Blizzard I have two plug and play units from Kenwood, which is not a copy of DelPhi(don't really know how to spell those K-Mart brands) Audiovox is a copy though. I leave one plug and play at home and the other in my boat, could just have one but if I am in the boat and my wifes at home, what are we going to do. Who has not heard a commerical on the radio in a year( oh yeah that is me). I have no idea why everyone is stuck on XM, especially when I have had both and there is NO COMPARISON Sirius kicks XM's *** all the way around. Like Closer9 said look at the mfg. XM does have Alpine, I will give you that(I still have that tuner if anyone is interested-put it on ebay twice and never sold) but that Alpine tuner is S^%$. I used to be an Alpine man, now it is solely Kenwood. I don't even want to talk about crappy Sony products( my last car was done totally in Sony, I think the only thing that survived after a year of use was two 4" midrange speakers). Either way like I said before both XM and Sirius are far better improvements to FM. Another thing not mentioned here that people should be aware of before they buy is programming both XM and Sirius have different programming so one might offer something the other doesn't and vice a versa. So check out BOTH websites and see if the content of one is your preference than the content of the other. Pick Sirius or XM and you will be pleasantly suprised, and also addicted. You will never go back to FM again.

I've always had great, no, perfect service from Sony products.

On the other hand, my Kenwood tuner took a dump, and is why i no longer have Sirius. I'd take it back to K-Mart, but they won't even sell that junk.

XM SUX

I have to say that XM is a total joke! I had it in my truck and what do I get:

1. Crappy sound quality and dopped signals. Why? Because they have two sats with tons of repeaters everywhere which gives me crappy sound quality and dropped signals. Not to mention XM has a serious sat problem where the power is degrading...hope they last. With SIRIUS' 3 sat system and far less repeaters, I get better quality....yea I had to research this due to my fustration with XM.

2. I pay 10 bucks, I expect no ads. What do I get? Ads....sigh. I will gladly pay 3 bucks a month for no ads. I get no ads with SIRIUS.

3. Programming sux with XM because it is corporate driven!

4. The more units I get, I don't get a break in price. I do with Sirius.

I had a XM unit in my truck and it's now in the garbage. I got a SIRUS unit and I am toally hooked at the better sound quality and better programming! Yes, even for rap music

Cool

Funny, myself (and quite a few other folks on this forum) are not experiencing the issues you say you had.

Maybe you had an antenna issue, or possibly a receiver problem ?

As far as the "power is degrading" problem you refer to with XM's satellites, could you please post where you got that info ? I would be interested in reading about that.

XM does not advertise that they are 100% commercial free, so why would you be surprised by hearing a commercial ?

If you have more than 1 unit, XM does offer reduced pricing on the additional units.

I auditioned Sirius in my friend's car on a 2 day business travel trip. I can honestly say I could not hear a difference in the sound quality between Sirius or the XM in my truck.

No flame intended, just curious...

Sirius versus XM

Short Version: Sirius Hands Down!

Sirius = NO commercials on the music streams
XM = up to 10 minutes of commercials per hour

Sirius = 3 Healthy satellites with 4th on the ground ready to fly.
XM = 2 Satellites are degrading and insurance won't pay. May fall to Earth in flames.

Sirius = Gaining ground on subscriptions. Used to be 12:1 XM, now its 3:1. What does that tell you?
XM = Looks old and tired and increasing commercials

Sirius = Programming rated better by audio experts
XM = Owned by GM to the tune of 11%. Do you really want to support Chevy?

Sirius = 560 million in cash
XM = owes GM big time and spends $23,000,000 in interest expense per quarter.

Sirius = Video capable (satellite TV)
XM = Owned by Clear Channel

Sirius = Standard factory installation in the F-150 STX
XM = is available in F-150's, but why?

Need More?

I have Sirius and I think its wonderful. No other reasons to give than those above me.

Satellite_Ready, like I mentioned in the other thread, the STX doesn't have Sirius from the factory, you have the Sirius capable deck (Kenwood z828), and you need an external tuner (same as the XM requires external tuners), and a little terk antenna up on the roof.

Commercials are only on select channels. 35 of the music channels are commercial free. All other channels are limited to no more than 6 minutes of commercials per hour, but typically have 2 minutes of commercials per hour. I personally have NEVER heard 10 minutes of commercials on XM.

Again, would someone please tell me where I can read all about this satellite trouble ? Please ?

As of June 30, 2003, XM Radio reported 692,253 subscribers. This represented a net subscriber addition of 209,178 for the second quarter; a 43% increase from the first quarter 2003 and five times the ending subscribers from the second quarter of 2002.

SIRIUS ended the second quarter on June 30, 2003 with 105,186 subscribers, an increase of 55% during the quarter.

Any real data to back that commercial info you posted up ? I guess you listen to XM everyday and can validate this ?

"Audio experts" ? Congress is manned by "experts".

XM Satellite Radio Inc., an emerging force in broadcasting, was incorporated in 1992 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. XM is publicly traded on the NASDAQ exchange since October 5, 1999.

In other words, GM thought enough of them to PURCHASE 11% of their stock.

For the second quarter of 2003, SIRIUS recognized total revenue of $2.1 million, compared to $70 thousand for the second quarter of 2002. SIRIUS reported a loss from operations of $(109.8) million for the second quarter of 2003, compared to a loss from operations of $(89.9) million for the second quarter of 2002. SIRIUS' EBITDA loss for the second quarter of 2003 was $(86.3) million, compared with $(67.8) million in the second quarter of 2002. The EBITDA loss for the second quarter of 2003 included a $14.5 million non-cash charge associated with the disposal of SIRIUS' previous subscriber management system.

SIRIUS reported a net loss applicable to common stockholders of $(111.8) million, or $(0.12) per share, for the second quarter of 2003, compared with a net loss applicable to common stockholders of $(124.6) million, or $(1.62) per share, for the second quarter of 2002.

Translated - They lost more this year than they lost last year...

Video capable ? Again, please post the source of this info.

XM = Partners with DirecTV. Hmm, video anyone ?

F-150 STX has a Sirius-capable radio; it does not come with Sirius. You still have to buy the antenna and receiver...

Need more what? BS?? Nope, just need ACCURATE data...

If you are going to bash a person or company, you should be considerate enough to use real data, not your own perception of reality. All of the data I posted here came from both companies' SEC filings for 2003. Where did you get your data ?

XM = 2 Satellites are degrading and insurance won't pay. May fall to Earth in flames.

>*XM has a spare ready to go, and ohh yeah, XM's two are the most powerfull commercial sats in existance, more powerfull than Sirius's three. XM's also stay in place so my home signal does'nt fall apart like the Sirius signal does.

Sirius = Gaining ground on subscriptions. Used to be 12:1 XM, now its 3:1. What does that tell you?

Sirius = Programming rated better by audio experts
XM = Owned by GM to the tune of 11%. Do you really want to support Chevy?

>*Support GM? Hell yes. The only other American car company? How stupid. Are you three years old? Your going to choose sat companies by who offers what as factory equipment? Duh. Besides, you sound stupid enough to buy factory equipment in the first place. (You)...."yes, i'd like to buy the Sirius option at $400 instead of going down to Best Buy and having it installed for half of that"

Sirius = 560 million in cash
XM = owes GM big time and spends $23,000,000 in interest expense per quarter.

>*C'mon, you really want to argue numbers? Look at Nasdaq. Sirius spends their money, ohh wait, the 1.5 billon shares of it like drunken sailors. They can afford to sponsor a Winston cup car, but have to secure funds to operate until 05? $560 millon in cash? BS!

Sirius = Video capable (satellite TV)
XM = Owned by Clear Channel

>*I'm an owner too. Big deal. In fact, they would even let a troll like you own. So where do they get the bandwidth to go with TV? XM and Sirius have the same amount. Where's it coming from?

Sirius = Standard factory installation in the F-150 STX
XM = is available in F-150's, but why?

>*You can't get the any statement right here can you?

NO! Because you have diarrea of the fingers. All your statements are either BS, or half truths. Funny how two "members " on this thread with only a few posts. Huh, smells like backstage trolls to me. We were all happy with our sat radio discusion, and you and your backstage buddy blow in and flame us, somehow thinking that we don't know anything about XM or Sirius, or really care that you think Sirius is better. I HAD Sirius. But i HAVE XM.

Boys, it's a radio... listen to it... but don't fight about it... maybe you need to turn off that gangsta rap, and just enjoy the sounds of nature for awhile... ease up... sheesh... you're scaring my cat.

Sure, but then we'd only hear the usual "ratata" and broken glass drive-bys sound. About the cat.. well.. there's another sound.
