Cool idea, I have wondered about that myself. My only question is how is the steering lock defeated? Also, the chip that is in the key is a must, the truck won't start without it.

ive actually thought about that too i believe you would almost have to find some place hidden to put the key in to turn the switch(eg.under the seat)

i dont think there would be much to it you would have to have a hot wire a neg and a ground to the sawitch and the same to the button i think you could splice the switch off of the button so you could turn the switch in your hidden place to get the juice andthen hit the button

The easiest way would be to use a remote start kit and use your pushbutton to trigger the start sequence.

It gets a little more complicated if you just want to use the button in place of the key (i.e. push button to crank, release when engine is running). The problem you'll get into here is your switch cylinder not only controls engine cranking, it also activates the accessories in your truck -- including those that are required to make the truck run. You'd have to work a way to activate the accessories for it to work.

Good luck!

Talking

I did this mod in my Miata that I autocrossed. Very simple I found a push button switch i liked and wired it up. I put mine in place of the cig lighter. I still had to put the key in the ign., but that was for security puposes( left top down 95% of time). I had friends ask me how I did it and I like being able to turn of over the engine on cold days with out it cranking. Lets oil get pupmed up a little.

security key

I know that in GM cars, the "Security Key" was merely a resistor. They used a few hundred different resistor values and put them in the keys. Each car security system was tuned to require a certain resistance value across the key. It was easily defeated (for remote start purposes) by placing a simple resistor, matching the value of the key, between a certain pair of wires in the ignition harness.

I wonder if the security keys on Fords are of the same idea?

Anyway, there must be a way to defeat it since a local shop can successfully install a remote starter. Figure out how they do it and a button start should be as simple as hooking up the correct wires.
