Fuel monitor

I have a 2001 SCREW w/5.4 engine that i have been trying to get accurate fuel consumption values for; no fuel monitor on this truck so I have had to rely on full tank calculations. I also have fuel monitoring system that is designed for a marine (boat) application that I was considering installing on my truck. It is a very accurate unit and since I no longer have a boat thought of installing it in the truck.

My question is regarding fuel line pressure, I have heard the pressure is quite high at the injectors but what about after the inline fuel filter, what is the pressure put out by the fuel pump? Most, if not all, boats have the fuel pump at the motor and the fuel lines are typically at vacuum. I know I can make this monitor work with moderate pressures but not sure if the line pressure is too high to use with simple barb fittings.

What other aftermarket fuel monitoring systems are guys using for their trucks?

Anybody? A search for fuel system pressure turns up ~25-40psi as rail pressure. I am assuming this is the pressure throughout the line and Incan probably seal the fuel flow sensor to this pressure but am hesitant to do it without hearing more.

I think I will go ahead and try to install it in some place that if it blows will not spray fuel on any potential ignition sources, probably near the fuel filter.

I know on some outboards, and I assume other engines with high pressure injection, there is a pre pump that pulls (or pushes in the case of cars) fuel from the tank and then at just a couple psi feeds a secondary pump that increases the fuel pressure into the hundreds of psi. I wanted to make sure that I was not dealing with a fuel system that was putting out too much and it sounds like that is the case.

Does anyone know how the factory fuel management systems determine their fuel flow? From what I have read it sounds like it is some passive computer computations based on sensors not directly measuring fuel flow (like some boats that base fuel use on rpm, or vice versa, rpm off fuel flow). The system I have actually takes direct fuel flow readings which should be more accurate.
