Troyer Efan and Pulleys Installed
Troyer Efan and Pulleys Installed
First Impressions - I have only had these on since Sunday so I cannot make any statements regarding gas mileage etc... However upon installation I noticed the following:
1 - Noise levels are WAY DOWN. Without that stock clutch fan that truck seems much quieter.
2 - Throttle response is increased. Meaning when you step on the gas there is not as much lag as before.
3 - The engine bay looks nicer (Pics below and yes I know its dirty
)
Those of you looking to do this, I would not make these your first mods. The shear cost of doing this and the minimal benefit I have seen so far do not make it very cost efficient. I am sure in the long run I will be happy, once I can realize some mileage gains.
Next on my list is gears and a gryphon.
Fans create lots of spacer and make things look nicer under the hood. Make sure you check your temp probes. In the picture you can see that mine backed out. I have since re-installed them but think I make need to use some RTV to hold them in place as the 3m tape might not hold up well here in the desert where summers are over 100 and winters are in the teens.

The Controllers were recommended to be mounted above the coolant reservoir tank.

The hardest part of everything was removing the pulleys. Luckily I had a tool that could be used to hold the pulley in place while I broke the nuts free. Also you need a harmonic balancer tool to pull the crank pulley.
Also note that impact tools were a big help, especially when putting on the new crank pulley. We thought we had it on all the way but when we started the truck it make this awfull noise. The bolt holding the pulley on was not tight enough.

I installed the e-fans a few months ago. My 5.4L short wheel base has gotten a best of 18 MPG on the highway before the fans and got 21.5 after the fans on a highway trip to El Paso.
Most my driving in in a small town, around the property, or in an orchard so my gas milage usually sits in the 13 MPG range. The fans pulled this up to about 14 MPG.
My fans should pay for themselves in about 2 years in gas savings.

Thanks for the write up about them. I purchased a set of the efans back when Troyer had the group buy but I haven't installed them yet because I really want the underdrive pulley set too. How long did it take you to install the fans and the pulley set ?
Overall I am happy with everything. I just wanted to let others know a tuner will cost less and you will feel more of a difference. Order I would do things in would be. Exhaust, tuner, intake, fans, pulleys. If you are lifted the first thing should be gears.
Thanks for this write-up with pics and tips. Mucho helpful for when I do my install. May try to install my e-fan and pulleys next week.

Man, that's a neat install there. The kit for the fans, it fits right does it?
Temp wise, in the heat, how does it do versus with the belt drive fan set up?
Anyone else use these electric fans and get a mileage boost? If so, how much?
Sure got me interested!

I have also done this mod and I'm extremely happy with the results as well and it really does clean up the engine bay I also installed a Saleen radiator when I installed the fans and everything together worked well and gave me some horsepower back that was being used by the accessories and big fan but like the OP said the biggest difference I felt was throttle response definitely not as much lag

I live in Medina outside Bandera. I own the Apple Store (famous resteraunt & Bakery) out in the Hill Country.
If you take a nice drive out into the Hill Country, I will gladdy pop the hood. My truck has become a work truck so it is filthy and stratched.

It's a special hi-temp electric fan adhesive in a caulking gun tube.
It's called "E-Adhesive".
The fans will 'suck' temselves onto the rad anyway
Yes - some. A tuner can correct for this, if you wanted to, or if you found the idle too low (lack of alt output, etc).
