CB Questions

Hi, All -

I'm planning eventually to install a CB in my truck. Here's what I'm thinking of putting in. Feel free to tell me if I'm being stupid, because I don't know much about CBs.

I'm planning to use a Firestik stake hole mount, probably in the front driver's side with a 5' FS II sitting on a 3" spring and an almost 3" quick disconnect. That should get a good amount of antenna up above the roof. Trying to figure out if the bolts on the stake mount bracket are long enough with the rail cap in place, or if I'll need to figure out how to install it under the cap. Also trying to figure out where/how best to ground the antenna mount (bed is about to get Line-Xd).

Coax will be routed though one of the holes in the cab that's already there and zip-tied along the way to something (I haven't been under there to recon yet, I'm presuming there's a wire run or something that the coax can be secured to easy enough). Hopefully I can't mess that up too much.

Trying to decide if I want an SSB radio or not. I know what SSB is and generally how it works. What I don't know is whether it's worth getting. If yes, I'm thinking about a Galaxy DX 979. If not, probably a Cobra 29 of one form or another. Most venders offer to Peak and Tune service before shipping. Is that worth the $25-$40 I see that service listed for, or is that the CB equivalent of undercoating and fabric pre-treatment? I'll probably pull power directly from the battery, with a fuse and filter inline for good measure. Anything else I should consider?

Thanks!

For a beginner in a mobile, I would not recommend SSB. It will be hard for you to learn how to use it in the mobile. Now if it was for a base operation id say go for it. I talk alot of skip on SSB when its in. As far as the Peak and tune, id be very leary of who you have work on your radio. MOST shops that offer this are not reputable. CB repair is a dying breed and GOOD ones are few and far between, I have been in the hobby a long time and know of several good techs around the country that I would recommend. My suggestion would be buy a radio as cheap as you can get it then send it to a reputable tech for a tune up. PM me if you want more info.

Thanks, Buck. Work is going to have me gone half of March and most of April, so nothing's going to be happening fast now.
