All I did was to remove my stock fan shroud and fan and put it up in my attic. It is very easy to add back if I have any cooling problems.

One more thing ROUSHFAN-1, the Black Magic 150 will work just fine on the 4.6. Flex-a-Lite applications are based on HP and radiator size.

What Ranger?
question for you , or anybody who is knowledgeable about electirc fans. Would the Black Magic 150 electric fan have "Too" much cooling for my 4.2 liter V-6? I do not tow, but do haul my quad to the dunes during the winter months and camp during the summer I drive about 75% HWY miles, 25% city/residential. I've followed all the threads on electric cooling fans and know of another list member who installed a signal puller 16" fan (no shroud), draws 9.3 amps and pulls 2950 CFM. He also has the V-6 and reporting no problems. I like the Black Magic because it's a complete kit. I just want my engine to stay cool when the weather gets ~~hot~~.

BTW I live in San Diego, CA

Thanks,

F&B"s

I don't think you wouold have a problem at all with it. My radiator is packed with a power steering pump cooler, an oil cooler, and trainy cooler and not to mention A/C. I also have 2 more cylinders than you and I am not having any problems with mine. So far the worst I have had to deal with is a supper cold air conditioner when the fan is running. I don't pull anything very heavy, but I do go off road.

What Ranger!
I'm also in St. Louis and would like to look at your setup for the electric fan. Give me a e-mail if you don't mind. I am seriously looking to do this modification. What speed shop? What part number? How much?

RED--ONE,
What year did you buy your Black-Max Tonneau? Does your bed rails have the little stainless steel clips at the end to prevent the snaps from sliding off when the tonneau is removed? If not drop me an email at lmaox10@hotmail.com

Oh and welcome to the list! and your right, it's very addictive.

I bought my fan from BIER BROTHER's PERFORMANCE located in O'fallon MO off Terra Lane. They usually have this fan in stock at their store, but if not it only took a day to get mine in. Flex-a-Lite makes several flavors of this style. The make a double fan combo that pulls much more air but at a very high AMP draw. I chose the Black Magic 150 because of the way I use my truck and have not regretted it. I averaged my highest MPG to date this past weekend of 17.45 @ 70. I thought my gas guage was broke 'cause I make this trip at least 4 times a year and this time it barely moved. So far this has been one of my best mods.

You don't need a puller to do you fan install. Are you putting on an underdrive pully on the waterpump? I know that you have a different engine than mine, but removing the fan and pully on the 5.4 is a piece of cake. Its four bolts. By the way, how do you like your new electric fan?

I bought the Flexalite 210 from Summit Racing for $198. Summit carries Flexalite, permacool, and several others, I have always been pleased with their prices and service.
I had decided on the 210 for several reasons. The application guide at Flexalite reccomends the 210 for their largest horsepower applications, also the dual fan motor design has an added safety margin if one motor were to fail. The Flexalite is an all inclusive kit with an adjustible thermostat and AC relay built into a single control module, the permacool requires a wiring kit. The Flexalite is warranteed for 1 year while the Permacool is only 90 days. The Flexalite unit appears well made, the plastic shroud keeps fingers away from the spinning blades, and it has a rubber gasket to insure a good seal between it and the core.
The installation took about 8 hours, and went well. I mounted the unit to the core with the nylon screws included in the kit. I had thought about using the brackets, but the core brackets are not continuous and did not look like it would be as strong as attaching directly to the core.
I mounted the thermostat just to the left of the upper radiator hose on sheetmetal by the headlamp. The thermostatic bulb mounts inside the upper radiator inlet, Flexalite provides a rubber wedge with a slot to aid in sealing, but I still had to put two hose clamps on to get it to seal.
My initial impressions are good, the only time the fans come on is after extended idling and then only for about a minute. The truck is quiter without that big fan spinning. One negative point Ive noticed is that because there are two fans, there is sometimes a drone or vibration that can be felt in the cab when they are running.
I haven't put enough miles on this mod to be able to tell what the difference in Hp and mileage will be. I'll post again when I have some solid numbers to tell.

I haven't made any measurements, but the engine sure does seem to spin-up easier. Of course that may just be because it's not making all the noise it used to. But if it's quieter, it's not wasting power to make noise so I'd imagine there's gotta be some gain.

I don't know if your looking for exact dyno numbers or what, but since most 4x4 owners like myself don't want to spend the cash to get them we can just dream about a perceived HP increase. You definetly get one with this mod. How much? Well the jury is still out on that one until someone gets it dynoed before and after. I can tell you one thing, this is the best mod I have done so far. It heats up very fast in the winter and has a very cold air-conditioner in the summer. I am very surprised that on FORD's light duty pickups they have not included it from the factory. Just my .02$
