Remote Start installed
I just had a remote start put in my truck and it is pretty neat, especially in this kind of weather. It is Valet by DEI, these guys also make the Viper alarm system. I'm using only one remote, the one that came with the system. This remote dont have the panic button feature but I never used that anyway. Total price was $180 including installation. For those that dont ahve a garage or car port you might want to check this out.

does your 98 have the PATS system in the key as a security feature?
If so did they ask you to give them an extra key so they can defeat the factory antitheft system?
I'm considering installing one myself.

I install the Audiovox units for a living, as well as the Ford alarms. If you have pats, you'll need a key. Don't let them use their special "chip". It's not as reliable as using the chip...another words, it won't start. You can program the key yourself, although they can probably do it when you get the remote start installed.
DEI also makes Hornet, Sidewinder, and some others. You should check out their web site. Nice products. I'm presently trying to become an authorized retailer for DEI systems.

I had the DEI remote starter installed on my 99 Expy by Best Buy. It is only the remote start. No alarm or anything else.
They told me that they needed both factory keys to bypass the pats security system. I paid $ 240 for the install and some kind of special thing for the Pats.
I hope I did not get ripped off.

I had the Viper 550 Remote Start installed w/ the option of remote door locks added. It was installed by DOW stereo. There payment plan was right for us, 12 months no interest. We absolutely love the remote start. If really freaks out people when the truck starts up when no one is inside. I can start it from approx. 80 paces away.

Northern Tool (www.northerntool.com) has a remote start/alarm system with 2 remotes for $99. on the online catalog. I think it is also in a recent sale catalog for $69. If you want to look, go to the online catalog, search under automotive, keyword, ALARM.

My truck doesnt have the PATS secure feature (lucky me!!). But I did have to get a wirng module for the keyless entry. Circuit City is where it came from and they also did the installation.
FordBigFoot: sound a lil high to me, it would of been $30 more if I did have the PATS.
Crutchfield also carries one for $99 but they dont have a wiring kit for it for the F150 otherwise I might have done it myself.

You don't need any special "module" for a PATS system when you install a remote starter. It can be done with a relay and a programmed PATS key. In Jersey I have found DEI remote starters installed for $150. Pats override modules run around $30 extra.

I installed the code alarm surestart Lx. I love it. When I took it in for installation I was told about the key issue and they installed what they called A PIK. From what they said is this learns the codes in the Keys and uses them. What I like about it is it has an antena with it that allows you to remote start from 500 feet plus. My system cost me $450 It has alarm starter Kill Plus alot more extras
Johnny Bonds,
Did you purchase and install the remote start from northerntool.com? They have two different alarm/remote car starters and there is a $30 difference. I don't know why and they indicate pretty much the same features. If you did purchase, how much was installation?

F150Y2K, I don't have remote start. Where I live we hardly ever have a frost. I just saw the posting and recalled seeing the units in a sales catalog at a lot lowere price than everone else was posting. The catalog had 2 different ones and there was a difference in what they did but I don't recall what it was. I'll try and find it and let you know.

They are in Northern Tool catalog #145, page 2. This is a new catalog so prices are still good. #331881-C145 is $69.99, it has 2 functions, starts engine and unlocks or locks power door locks. Works only on vehicles with automatic trans and FI. If you have an OEM security system you have to have a kit, the Ford kit is $29.99, GM kit is $8.99, go figure.
The other one is part #331787-C145 for $99.99. Additional features are that it will open trunk, lock and unlock ignition and arm your alarm system.
Both claim to have 500 ft range and both are programable to start the enging every few hours and let the motor run at set times from 5 to 25 minutes. their # is 1-800-533-5545.

This may be a piece of junk but I have been buying stuff from them for years, mostly tools and equipment, and they normally have name brand items of good quality. Last year I bought a pressure washer from them and they left out a filter. I called and 2 days later they sent me the missing part plus an extra one for free.

Well the difference in price is Ford has a more complex system. GM uses a resistor, Ford uses a computer chip. The "chip" or "PIK" is not as good as using a key. When you use a programmed PATS key a loop of several wires goes around the key cylinder. When you use one of these Pats adapters, only the end of the wire (antenna?) goes next to the key cylinder. Sometimes the pats module may not pick up the signal from this, meaning it won't start your truck. That, and I have yet to see one of the brands of these approved by Ford for PATS use. Ford states that use of unapproved keys may result in intermittent key problems. They approve Curtis, Strattec, Ilco, and a couple others.
