AF1 Intake Installed
STRANGE NOISE after AF1 Intake Installed
Hi everyone,
Just finished installing an AF1 Intake on my 01 Screw. After driving about 1 mile a noise (Horn effect of blowing across the top of a coke bottle) developed when I let off the gas and coasted at a speed of about 5 mph. The noise only lasts for about 5 seconds and then goes away. Thought maybe the parking brake got partially pressed, made sure it was released and that was not the problem. I got to a parking lot and came to a complete stop, put the truck in neutral, then back to Overdrive without pressing the gas and the noise was there again. Did this about 4 or 5 times with the noise present each time but the length seemed to get shorter each time. I am thinking (may be way off) that the computer and possibly the torque converter may have to retrain. Any comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
BC32

Makes sure that no leaks are present in your install. Unless you're throwing codes, that noise you hear is NORMAL. That's okay though, many of us were concerned when we first heard it too.
P.S. Did you install the supplied O-ring?

Thanks for the reply.
I did install the supplied O-ring. I thought there was a chance that the noise would happen again this morning, so I just drove around the block and back to my house and it did happen again. I pulled up in the driveway and popped the hood, went and looked while the noise was present and it sounded as if it is actually coming from the filter itself, but not real sure. The noise would then disappear after a period of 5 to 30 seconds. I then went and pressed the gas while truck was in park, let the RPM settle back to idle, put in drive, and the noise was there again at idle motor and in drive, put truck back in park. Went back around to the engine, looked and listened to try and figure out where it was coming from and still thought it sounded like it was just the filter.
I started thinking back to yesterday when I drove the truck right after installing the intake and the noise was there. Do not know if this has anything to do with it, but both times I have gotten this noise, the truck was not warmed up yet. The noise goes away as soon as the truck warms up to normal operating temp. I will check the connections to make sure there are no leaks. What is a good way to test for leaks (soapy water in a spray bottle)?

I am not throwing any codes as of yet and have driven approx. 70 miles since I installed it. I have a guy at work that put an intake on his altima (not AF1) and does not have this noise so this is why I am a little concerned.
If everything was installed right and you've tightened everything I don't know what would be causing the noise. I have an 03 Screw that I put the AF1 on about 2 months ago and I don't have any noise like you described. LOL
Rogone,
Thanks for the post. I went back and checked every connection like kaliscrew2k2 had suggested and found that the filter to the MAF adapter was not tight enough. I tightened it down and drove the truck again and did not experience the noise. I am anxious to see if the noise happens again after the truck has sat in the parking lot all day until I leave work. If it does not, then I guess you and kaliscrew2k2 were right on. Thanks again.

Glad things are working out the way you wanted it to. Occasionally, I get that same noise (blowing thru the top of an empty bottle), especially when the engine compartment is cold, however I have no leaks, since I checked the connections over and over again. The occasional noise doesnt bother me and nothing I really should be worried about. I already had the system for a year now and no problems. The only SOTP gain i've noticed was quicker throttle response and that's about it. Did nothing to gas mileage, and increase in power wasn't felt. It sure looks pretty under that hood though

Florida-F150,
Thanks for the post. I have disconnected the battery and supposedly reset the battery. I still get the noise when the engine compartment is cold. I called the company that I got it from and they in turn called AF1. AF1 said that the sound is normal, especially when it is cold. I would think sine AF1 is aware of the problem (maybe not problem just noise that is annoying as hell) that something would be done to fix it. I have a buddy that installed a K & N on a Chevy and has had no noise and is very pleased with it. I am thinking about sending the AF1 back and getting something else. The one thing I found that did not fit as tight in the stock system was the temperature sensor. I took it out and put teflon tape around part of it and stuck it back into the tube hoping mabye there was a leak there. Have not had the noise since but the morning and day time temp has warmed up, so it could be that.

Perhaps that's because your magnaflow setup drowns out all the little noises. I forgot to mention that when I hear the "bottle effect" noise, it is when I'm outside the truck near the engine compartment, not when inside the cab.
I dont have the AF1, I just modded the stock intake by removing the silencer elbow and I also get the "moose call" noise in the colder weather. Not always, but at certain throttle positions you'll hear it.
I guess that's why they call it the silencer elbow?
