Passenger Video Monitor Choices
Passenger Video Monitor Choices
All, another post related to my new Pioneer AVIC X920BT nav unit. I really like the unit (with the exception of the Bluetooth noise described in a separate post which I'm working to diagnose and fix). However, I'm having a hard time deciding on how to approach video monitors for the passengers.
I like the idea of screens on or on the headrests for the kids in the back, but OEM-style replacement headrest units run way over $1,000 for a pair. I'm a little intimidated by the idea of cutting my headrests to install permanent screens in them. Any good or bad experiences there?
What about options for the front seat passenger? I'd love to see what you guys have done for that.
Finally, last question. What are my options for piping the head unit video and audio signal to the rear screens without the adults in front having to listen in on the kiddie shows for the entire trip? I'd like to wind up with IR headphones back there if possible.
Thanks,
Tom

I really like integrated headrest monitors. I have two waiting for an install that may never happen. They look the cleanest and most professional but they are a calling card for thieves. I hate the fact that you cant really cover them up much and yes the factory ones are expensive. There a a few options for the price factor but all are still prone to the theft problem.
As for the front seat passenger heres what i did.

And lastly the audio... you are spot on with the IR headphones. Most quality brand headrest screens feature a built in IR for the sound but you can easily pick up a set. If your unit had rear vid out then it will have rear L and R out too.
I previously had an IR setup for the rear and mounted the IR sending unit on the back end of the overhead console. It read loud and clear out back and even for the front pass incase they wanted to listen too. Pic can be seen here and here.
They are fairly inexpensive and all you have to do is have the RCA for the rear ran to the sending unit and a switched 12 + and -
