Camera display on OEM nav unit?

Hi all. I have a 2008 KR with the factory nav system but not the factory reverse camera. I added an aftermarket reverse camera at the time of purchase and it displays on a small (2.5") screen on a pod on the dash. I'm wondering if it's possible to wire the camera so that it displays the image on the factory nav screen? Has anyone done this? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Camera display on OEM nav unit

Hey:

Sorry no one responded; I assume it’s because this issue has been addressed in many post. To date, I know of no one being able to direct hack the camera into the navigation unit. I ended up purchasing a Navigation Video/Camera (Dual input) Interface module from a company called AVELECTRONIC.COM. Their instructions pretty much $ucked so I had to draw my own diagram which I sent to them for future reference.

Nevertheless, it allows the camera to be viewed while in reverse, as well it provides additional video inputs for a DVD player, second camera, etc.

Overall, can't say I would go with them again as I have seen other manufactures that appear to be as good or better. However at the time they were pretty much my only option. Two years later, it still works and does what you are looking for.

Can't remember the cost, somewhere around $200 bucks.

Good Luck.

Hey thanks Tazz for the info. I did a search before posting but didn't see many responses. Probably an older topic anyway. I'll look into what you suggested as it may meet my needs.

Thanks again!

How hard was it to wire in? and how good is the picture quality?

I installed the factory camera in my 2009 F-150 that already had the factory Sony Nav radio. It wasn't difficult, just a little time consuming to get everything the way I wanted it. Once I had everything installed, I had to go to the dealer and have the unit programmed to turn on when in reverse.

Sorry I didn't write back sooner, haven't been on in a while. Drop me a PM if you would like to know more. Thanks

Yeah, I agree with trk35, took longer to make it all look pretty, then to actually locate and splice wires. As for picture quality, its perfect as long as you use a shielded wire to splice the camera wires from the Passenger A Pillar over to the video input jack 2 of the module. On the 08, it was a Red w/Yellow stripe and Black w/yellow stripe, with the green being the trigger to activate. The only touchy part was you have to removed the screen from the navigation unit, and pass a wiring harness through the radio into the back of the actual screen. This isn't for the faint of heart... But once complete, you'll think, that really wasn't so bad. Just a lot of tiny screws to keep track of. This is why I said I probably wouldn't go with them again... I believe there are other systems out there that do not require you to disassemble your navigation system.
