Factory Nav in '04s

I see several oem nav units for sale on ebay, but alot of them say for '05-'08 fords. Will these units work in the '04 f150s? I don't see why they wouldn't but I didn't know

OEM Navigation was not an option for 04 F150s but that does not mean that you cannot add it. I have an 04 FX4 F150 and I installed the factory NAV system in my truck. If you are lucky enough to find one from a Lariat with your options, then you will just need to buy an antenna adapter to fit between the 04 antenna connector and the "newer" NAV\radio antenna jack. If you buy one from another model F150 with different options or from a Lincoln\Mercury vehicle you have to have it reprogrammed for your vehicle.

nav in 04

he is correct but one thing to think about. I myself is on the hunt for this concept and there are a few factors that you will encounter. Such as I have a factory nav out of a 07 Navigator which the only problem is not the ant. not the gps but the can bus system thats built into 05 and up ford products. Even the factory navigation itself has to have can bus wires to it to even turn on. I tried it in my 06 mustang and it does turn on and work but it still needs to be programmed. As for the 2004 f-150 it will not do anything till it gets some sort of signal from a can bus to the navigation itself. Does anybody know a way around this? Its only two wires with data transfer in a 16 pin harness thats keeps my f-150 from being decked out with navigation. I put a tester on it and it is low voltage and pulsating which means it data transfering.

Hmmmm. Good Question. I'm going to look into this as I also have an '04 FX4 that I would like to put factory nav into. I will try some things and when I figure it out I will post.

What about this?Would this allow you to tap into the existing CANbus system and power the NAV system?

Thats for adding an aftermarket radio.

Even if it was for adding factory nav, it wont do ANYTHING if Canbus isnt on the truck side of the harness like in an 04.

If CAN is not present at all then why couldn't you just build your own CAN system for just the NAV. You could just use a CAN power T to convert your 12v system into your logic power to supply the 2.5v needed on the green and yellow transmission wires. You could add the terminator on one side of the Power T and make another CAN cable with a 4 pin deustch connector on one end and run the CAN wires into the connector into the back of the NAV. Granted you are "supposed" to have 2 terminators in a properly functioning CAN system, but I have seen them work just fine with only 1 terminator before. I am going to look for a factory Nav for my truck. I have access to a LARGE abundance of CAN cables that we use here for precision agriculture. I will get something together that works.

If I can get it going and operating properly, would any of you guys with '04s be interested in a plug and play kit to make it work in your truck?

nav

I would be as long as you give a tutorial on how to do it. Remember 04's have no can bus and you would have to figure a way to replacate it in the can bus nav or bypass it. I already pulled the factory nav apart and by means there is no way to bypass inside, it is very difficult for your do it yourselfers like most of us. Hope you figure it out bro cause im tired of looking at a perfectly good factory nav sitting in the garage. good luck and I will keep trying as well.

By the 2004 not having an existing CANbus that makes it easier. Here's my plan. I have a CAN T which can convert 12v battery power in to you High Current and logic power by hooking up simply a black wire to a clean ground and a Red wore to 12v battery power. This is a small cable(about 6 inches) On 2 sides of the T we can connect CAN terminators to terminate the system and provide the proper resistance we will need. Then I will make a cable to plug into the 3rd side of the power t and out of it will be 2 wires, a green and a yellow. Then those wires will have to have terminals crimped on and installed into the hardshell tha connects to the back of the NAV to supply your 2.5v on each wire.

We are building our own CAN system so there is no reason to bypass anything. as far as the Nav is concerned everything is there that needs to be. It will take me a little bit to get ahold of a system to test this out, but once I do, I will surely post and let you all know how it went. I don't want to get one that needs to be programmed and unfortunatly my FX4 does not have steering wheel controls.

Seems like a lot of work for a factory nav system, but go for it and let us now how it works.
