Broken ashtray after stereo install...help...
Broken ashtray after stereo install...help...
I recently had a new XM module installed in my truck and ever since the install, the ashtray has either been sticking horribly or won't stay shut.
I brought this up to the installers as soon as it was done and they swear they had nothing to do with it, despite the fact that it was working perfectly for 3 years prior to my bringing it in there. Since I can't prove they broke it, looks like I'll probably have to fix it.
Just a few hours ago, it came open and now it won't shut at all.
I pulled off the wood trim around the stereo and can see how the ashtray tilts back, but it's not catching when I let it go like it is supposed to. It looks like there may be some magnetic catch, but I could easily be wrong.
Can anyone give me some advice into how this thing works so I can try to figure out what is wrong?
Any help is appreciated...

If you have the flow through center console it's not magnetic. It's a plastic catch and release roller mechanism. Pull the center trim off and unscrew the ash tray assembly. I think you pull up once you unscrew it and it comes out. Hopefully there's just some debris in there or a wire stuck in it.
I pulled mine out to put felt on the back of the ashtray because it was rattling. I don't recall an easy way to disassemble the actual ashtray assembly once you remove it so if you can't find an easy, obvious fix once you have it out then you'll just have to buy a new one. Also, it's pretty much all plastic so you'll have a hard time fixing it. I'd check with some junk yards or used parts places.
Good luck!
