i have tomtom 510, great gps system. GOOD CHOICE!! i mounted suction cup thingy on windshield ran wire down behind dash, and hardwired into radio (or you could use something else that is only on when key is). haven't had any problems with it yet. only thing is can't loan tomtom to anyone else and give charger with it. i couldn't see anyway to take apart the cord end either, so i just started "chompin" in it.

Just three days ago fried a Garmin Nuvi trying to hardwire it, and have been dealing with 12 volt electronics for years. Now that I look back, I should have been more careful when trying to hardwire.

What you need to do is take apart the plug that comes with it, and solder two wires to the device inside. One for power and one for ground. Will make more sense once you open it up.

Most GPS systems do not take a full 12 volts, or 14-15 if the car is running. It can be done, just be careful!

I think that would be the safest bet for the GPS system. If you are feeling constructive, you can search google for "hardwiring a gps" system, and you will return some interesting search results. If I can find the specific article I will post, but it gives a step by step for hardwiring a GPS.

If you do go with the cig plug route, make sure to use electrical tape around the outside of the plug incase it accidentally contacts and sparks. Would be a mess if you fried your electrical system or started a fire!

Look, go to one of the local shops and pick up a CLA (cigarette lighter adaptor). Wire that in and plug them together. DONE!

I picked up one of these for my TomTom GO920. Hooked it up to a 12v acc. source. The 12v to 5v transformer is built into the base.

Here it is with the TomTom mounted:
