Unhappy Rear View Camera Installation Trouble!

Howdy folks,
After reading brewdudes post about rearview cameras I decided to go for it. Seeing as he had the same headunit as I did I thought it would be cake. Boy was I wrong. My camera is dead, doesn't work!

Using these threads as a ref. I have the exact same headunit and camera as brewdude.

I tapped my cameras power wire into my left reverse light. Purple/Blk than grounded the ground on the chasis.

I bought RCA cables and ran them underneath the truck and plugged it into my HU. However I was a bit short on the cable and had to splice two RCA cables together.

Also I did not connect the reverse sensor wire to the fuse.

Any food for thought? Brewdude would you be able to throw some insight?

how did you splice your AV cable? actually cutting wires, or you mean putting in one of those female-female connectors to connect to male ends together?

and i would wire everything up as you have read, before you consider the camera to be dead. also make sure you are in reverse if thats how you are powering the camera

I actually spliced the AV cables, cut them open and bullet connected them.

The car was in reverse, also hooked the camera to a constant source. But your right I should connect the whole thing before making a moan fest, was just worried because the camera was not showing up at all on the source screen. Would imagine that it would come up as a source as long as it was receiving power... wait...

I'll go get some more T-taps tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
Hopefully I don't make a fool of myself. (Too late )

Was also just curious to how everyone else wired their camera together. I think I'm the only one to splice it into my reverse light. Hmph!

yah i dont know how your headunit is set up, but i had an old line convertor for a tv that converted RCA jacks to an anolog Coax cable, and it wouldnt convert the audio alone, it had to have a video feed too. where maybe the HU is set up the other way that it has to have audio to show the video. Just throwing that out there, but i really doubt thats your problem

My AV .02 worth. I have NEVER had any luck splicing an RCA, always better to use Female to Female adapter then tape to ensure seal.

It will vary with the LUX rating on the camera. Mine worked ok...but if you want to see better install back up lights.

Hello to all! I recently purchased a OEM backup camera(which is mounted on the FORD logo on the tailgate) and the FoMoCo camera display mirror. I got it on Ebay. It comes with a diagram sheet but just starting out I found that ther's no where to connect the camera plug under the tailgate area. Does anyone know if I need to buy a wire harnes that goes the length of the truck? Has anyone installed one of these?
