OK - cool.

I just finished getting the gps wire through and into the dash. On to the next step...

I'm going to get the iPod adapter situated now. I'm going to just place it in the glove box for now because I dont have a mount for my nano. Plus - I dont know if I'm brave enough to mess with the center console. I'll tinker with this later.

Stupid question here. I need to wire the power into the Crutchfield harness right? Yellow wire, then same with the black wire(ground)?

Changed my mind.

I took the kickplate off on the passenger side and ran the IPod connector as shown:

I'm going to completely hide the Ipod unit at the bottom of the dash - sort of where my finger is pointing:

Got the adapter in. I mounted it on the driver kickplate. Easy access in the future? Who knows.

Starting to study the backup camera installation.

Question about the camera:

I'd like to mount the camera between the bumper and the tailgate like in this post:

Pioneer gives you a little mounting piece the camera screws into. If I place that flush on my bumper under my tailgate, the two hit when I lower my tailgate. I guess I could grind it down some, but does anyone else have a suggestion?

I mounted my camera under the liscense plate and folded the bracket back on top of plate .The camera now sits a little higher than lis plate in center top.I also found that mounting under tailgate was to tight for my truck.

Hey man sorry I left you sort of hanging on the avic forum. New Years and stuff. It seems like you're doing great so far. In regards to the camera, I have the pioneer one as well. For the fit, it's a bit difficult for me to explain without picture...I'll try my best. The mount you mentioned should have a point where it bends for installation. Well what I did was put some industrial-strength double-sided tape on the bottom part (the part that bends). However I didn't bend the bracket, but I left it straight...and stuck it on behind the rear bumper. I've driven from NC to Los Angeles twice and it hasn't come close to coming off.

If my description is as bad as I think it is, just let me know. Worse comes to worse, pictures of that bracket could help...couldn't find any online. And also if you have any placement questions like antenna, mic, BT, ipod, etc they are in my gallery for reference.

EDIT: and another thing regarding your iPod..don't be too dissapointed with the slow speed...my best advice for that would be to actually make playlists running from 0-9,A-Z. MUCH faster if you have way too many songs like me. Hopefully pioneer can fix this somehow when the Z2 comes out (supposedly its only a software update).

No problem! I was New Year's happy as well.

Back to the project. The last thing I did was install my mic:

On to the backup camera. Steve093: I understand the way you mounted the camera...I think I'll try that. My problem is understanding where to run my wires.

I've taken the kick plates up on the passenger side:

rear plate...

front plate...

I'm figuring I put the wires in here - but how do I get them there from the camera?

Also - found something very disturbing on the driver's side rear kick plate:

This compartment was filled with water! Rained all day here yesterday - but nothing was open on the truck. I found a rubber grommet on the underside of this compartment, opened it, and the water drained. I have NO clue how this could have gotten there. Still scratching my head.

Let me know...

Chris

That's weird...did you open up the kick plates before the rain at all? I honestly couldn't tell ya, but maybe once in a while check again after it rains. Hopefully its just a one-time incident.

Regarding the camera...funny you mention the grommet because that's where you can slip out the wire and guide it to the rear bumper. Might want to get some tubing or something and tie it to be secure.

I didnt take the kickplate off before the rain - something I'll have to watch.

OK - camera is in place!

Took your advice on the location - and stuck it using the existing tape. I'll check it from time to time to see if I need to secure it more. I figured I could take the spare tire out and actually screw it in, but that's too much for now.

Ran the wires along the passenger side kickplates:

I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the tray in the back seat, ran the connection through there. I'll seal that up with some silicone later.

I'm ready to connect this thing!

I have the Crutchfield mounting kit - so I should be good there.

I've removed the cell phone mute wire for the bypass according to Ducati's instructions, and I think I know what I'm doing there. Just ground that cell mute wire after placing it into the correct position in the harness, along with the green parking brake wire. Is this correct?

As far as power goes, there a yellow wire that connects to my Crutchfield harness - I'll crimp the camera power into that. PLEASE correct me if I am off base here...!

Then, my original question about the harness itself:

Do I need the middle size connection at all?

Back in a few...

Chris

I've completed a test run of this thing. Realized i still have two more wires to hook up. The reverse sensor and speed sensor wire. But...I turned the truck on and everything came on! Also - I noticed in the settings section that my parking brake was ON - so I know the bypass worked!

I've read somewhere that the speed sensor is the grey/black wire already in the f150 harness. Do I just tap into that?

I think the reverse wire is in the fuse panel...green yellow wire.

Would anyone have any pics of this so I can make sure I do it right?

I know the speed sense wire is already in the main radio harness, but I'm not 100% sure which one. I believe it is green/gray wire.

This should help you with your wiring questions: http://www.fordf150.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31939

Highly suggest you go there but to make it short:
black/gray (look at the harness) = speed
green/yellow (above fuse box kick plate) = reverse

I feel like an idiot saying this but I can't remember what that middle harness is for the life of me right now...should be fine (someone else plz correct me if I'm wrong here)

Camera...you have to connect it to a switched power source..like the ACC line that runs to your HU so it turns on only when you put the keys in. Make sure that yellow line isn't a constant 12v (just the "yellow" part is what got me)...it can drain your battery.
