I've been looking all over the web for a forum for Blackwood owners. Never thought to check the blue oval pickup crowd. Tried all of the Lincoln pages but unless you have a Mark or an LS there isn't much there. From reading this forum, it seems as though there are quite a few people who have had 'woods for a while, too. Just got mine a month ago and this former "bowtie" guy LOVES this truck.Iam thinking of upgrading some things and could sure use some help finding parts. I'm used to finding small block Chevy parts everywhere. Call Jegs, tell them how fast you want to go and they ship what you need. But I have hit some bumps trying to find stuff for the 'Wood. Has anyone found a cold air intake kit for the DOHC engine that works? Also looking for a reprogrammer for the computer.
Hope to be around for a while. Anyone here from South Fla.??
Wouldn't an intake for the navigator work on the blackwood? After all, it is the same engine. For the programmer, check out the computer chips section in this forum. Mike Troyer is the man you need to post to, and he could steer you in the right direction on that intake kit as well.
yep anything motor related can be sourced from a navigator. i have a diablosport chip for the wifes and we modified a johnnylightning performance ram air box to work in the truck. but i believe either airraid or airforce makes a mandrel bent tube that will work. just search for a guy named bill murry on here he has both the intake and a superchip for his.
Blackwood Mods
Mike Troyer can supply both a chip and a filter combo that are dead simple to install. Less than an hour for both and using only a few hand tools. I also had a single inlet dual outlet muffler installed with dual tips.
Once you have installed the chip and filter, you will never go back, believe me. I now have 28k miles on mine, 20k of those with the mods. Both the shifting and the seat of the pants effect of the intake noise are totally awesome and it makes a whole new animal out of the truck. I ran a similar setup on my 99 Lightning and will do so on whatever I get to replace the Blackwood, if I do. Since I am three hours round trip from a track, I have never done a timed 1/4 mile but suspect it will be in the rock bottom 16s and maybe in the 15s with this set up.
Just out of curiosity, what did you pay for your Blackwood? I've not priced them here in Georgia lately.

BTW, welcome to our little niche in the world Straps.
I called Airaid and K&N and both said that since they hadn't done anything specifically for a Blackwood , they wouldn't guarantee either the fit or performance for theirs, even though it makes sense that the Navigator DOHC kit would do the job. The only one that I found tghat makes one for the 'Wood is Volant but I didn't like the way it looked.As far as a chip is concerned, wouldn't it be better to reprogram rather that replacing the prom? That way you could reprogram for diff. tire sizes, vary your shift points, etc. With the chip, aren't you locked in to what the chip designer thought was best?
I bought mine from a Linc. dealer. Has 43K mi. but it has an extended factory warranty to 6 yr. or 100K mi. and it is in perfect condition. Walked in on the day that they were going to send it to the auction so I got a good deal, I think. Paid 26.5 I just need to be careful with the mods so that I still have the warranty. Some of this "gee whiz" stuff is bound to go bad sometimes. I wish they would have warned me about the AC seats. Uncomfortable going down the turnpike at 90 with cold air blowing up ur butt and can't reach the control. Thanks for the welcome

What typr of muffler did you use? I was going to use a Flowmaster 50 series and come out the side like a lightning but I was told that the Flowmaster was a performance robber on the DOHC engine. Were you able to go out the back ? doesn't seem like enough room on the left side.

Sorry, I gave you the short form answer the other day. I own a HobbyTown USA franchise and December is a month when we do about 4 times our normal monthly volume so it gets busy. I had a good night crew today so took a few hours off.
I have a Superchips two position flip chip with side one being a mild state of tuning and side two being more aggressive. I only use the side one 95% of the time and it is more than adequate. At the time, 2 years ago, the programmable thingies were in their infancy and not readily available so I went with the piggyback chip concept which I had used on my Lightning.
Mike Troyer, and others as well I am sure, is extremely knowledgable about how to program a piggyback chip if you give him the parameters you want changed or improved. If you browse the chip section you will learn all you need to to be able to give the proper info to a chip tuner. I think Mike did my Lightning twice as I did not give the proper parameters the first time, my fault not his.
My filter is an Air Force One which I also got from Mike and it is the standard filter for a Navigator. We only had to go to Auto Zone to get one rubber connector to make it fit perfectly. It is an open cone/snorkel type and bolts up to the standard brackets etc.
As to the exhaust, I was told also by two tuners and my muffler shop guy that you do not want to flow too much exhaust on a 32 valve engine. They need some back pressure to function properly according to them. I am no engineer but I remember putting straight pipes on an 83 Harley Sportser I bought new and I ended up changing back to some medium restriction mufflers to get the torque back. Thing made a hell of a lot of racket but wouldn't pull the skim off of milk from a start and did not make any power at all until it was well up into the rpm range. As I said, I went with a single muffler in the same location as the stock one (unfortunately I do not have the paperwork to hand and do not remember what brand or model it is) and it is a single inlet dual outlet. The muffler shop guy said it would be very difficult to mount a second muffler on the left side (facing from the rear) but he was able to do a good job of routing a pipe to that side. Rdy2racwith used to have a set of pics I forwarded to her posted somewhere, maybe she can link it here to show you what the pipes and the intake look like.
To return to the results of this combo, in my opinion my Blackwood and both of Pat's Continentals were a bit weak in the low rpm range and did not make much power below 3,000 rpm due in part to needing to "get up" on the cams. The early and sloppy stock shifts also hurt low end performance. Now the Blackwood is quite strong on the takeoff and really howls when it gets up around 2,500 rpm until I run out of numbers on the tach, which I VERY rarely do.
Hope this helps. BTW, the dealer attitude towards mods seems to be a very individual thing. My dealers service manager, sales people and techs love my truck and have never hassled me one bit about any service or warranty issues although I will admit all of such issues have been electrical accessories and not engine or transmission related. With only five months left on the lease, I just hope nothing goes wrong but I have found the major mechanical bits to be just about bulletproof as was my Lightning.
Over maintaining the trucks, doing service twice as often as the book says etc., may be partly the reason for that.
