Calling all Poilice Officers

I have a serious question about the Law if you guys could help me out.

I have a person that is near to me that is being charged with Grand theft auto and couterfitting. No this is not a joke!

That person was caught with 2 trucks and a camper that did not belong to them. The cops also found some power tools and electrical equipment that was not that persons either.
The counter fitting was done over the computer and was mainly done by this persons friend and can be proven. But this person went along with it so of course the person is charged as well.

My Question is, how much time is this person looking at??? This person, although very stupid, is very dear to me and I want to know what to expect. How long will I not see them?

Disclaimer: Once again, this is a person that is very dear to me, please to not poke fun if you can help it. This is not me!
PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS IF YOU CAN.

I'm not a cop but I can tell you that if it is a first offense and he hires a very good lawyer he can walk on it with a stiff probation.

2nd offense or no money to buy his way out???? His new name will be bit#h for around 10 years...maybe out in 18-24 months with good behavior.

Ok, I was thinking around 10 years and hoping for the 18-24.
Yes it is the first offense of this nature.
Unfortunately, this person does have a checkered past, but nothing as stupid as this. I'm hoping this will teach this person a lesson. This person used to actually be a productive part of society until goetting down on their luck made a differnt person out of them.

Thanks

Good luck to him. One other thing I might add to the prediction. It sems that different counties react in different ways to theft crimes VS violent crimes.

Here in the county I live in, property crimes will land you in jail quicker than murder. Folks around here stay pretty darned busy trying to outdo the neighbors when it comes to showing off wealth. So when the grand jury gets together, they all start thinking about how awful it would be to get ripped off.
If you kill somebody they figure it wouldn't happen to them....Go figure.

Yes, I would agree with that. Funny how a different day or a judge in a bad mood can seal your fate just like that.

Laws are different in each state.

Past criminal record also dictates sentencing.

The counterfitting is the charge I would be more worried about. That is a federal offence, and they don't mess around when it comes to counterfitting,

He would do Federal time first for his Counter case. Afterwards, he will then do his state time for GTA. Of course, if he is convicted.

Yes, I am!
The concern is the friend of my person that was at the head of the counterfitting operation is my persons significant other.
This means there are feelings of protection involved, this mean my person might try to take the fall for the other person to keep the other person from Jail time.

My person doesn't have the computer skills to pull this type of operation off. I am hoping we can prove this in the court room. It was basically done by the other person and my person went along with it.

WHat a mess this is.

Also, this means that my person will most likely not ever see my Great Grandmother and Great Aunt again before they pass. They are 85 and 86 years old now. They are very dear to all of us. This is one of the more heart breaking issues.

Actually, one of the more heartbreaking situations is that this "person" was found in possession of trucks, campers, tools, etc. that didn't belong to them, as well as counterfeiting charges, and not a lot of sympathy is being shown for those who used to own said products.

If somebody stole from me and ended up in the slammer, the last thing that I would care about is how few times they would see their family members.

How about a little remorse for the victims?

you need to be looking for legal advice not police advice...
cops just book'em - judges and jury's convict 'em.

Just like Icebox97 said. Only a lawyer can tell you what your friend may be looking at. Each state has their own laws and some aren't so lenient. Many states have set up mandatory sentences for certain crimes. If your state has the program, he may do a diversion program in a boot camp prison and serve less time. The best advice is to seek out the best lawyer you can afford and hope for the best. Obviously this person has a problem and needs help, but like somebody else mentioned, don't forget about the victims. I know how I have felt when I've been ripped off.
