Your concern should not be "How long will I not see them?", you concern should be "What could I do to help make sure they get this big wake up call and get their life straightened out when it's all over".
People screw up, some worse then others. Some get a second (or more) chance at life, some don't (or don't deserve). What your friend did may be a big screw up, but really it's not that bad and life will move on. Thats what you should be worried about, them moving on when it's all done. Especially if this person is close to you.
Also I'd say convince your friend to get the "significant other" involved to. All the blame should not ride on half of the guilty party.
With all that said, I'm speaking from an ongoing experience. A few years ago my cousin got nailed for armed robbery and has a few years to go. The kid never had an easy life, was in trouble constantly, and was not brought up properly. Maybe if I had kicked hiss @ss back in line more often (like when we were younger) he would not be in the position he is in. But when he gets out, I'm gonna be there for him and I'm going to help him straighten out, even it means slapping him back in line.
don't forget about the victims
I think we have this thing figured out, and hopefully this type of thing will never happen again.
There really is no good way out of this, and nothing good comes from it on either the victim's or the criminals side.
The sad thing is there is a child involved that will not get to see their parent for a long time.
Everyone who is missing a parent knows you need two parents to make a child(correctly) There is always ill affects to only having one parent.
Well, Thanks for your advise and comments. I appreciate those who didn't take cheap shots at my expense as well.
