Talking I got my MTX thunderform!!!

yeah baby, ups dropped it off yesterday, the guy was giving it to me and said, "geesh, what do you got in here a dead body?" i said, "who knows" they look pretty good, i got them on ebay loaded for $295 and that was with shipping included, they are brand new, i know other sites sell them loaded for $300+, but i thought that the enclosure was plastic? i felt it, and it's pretty hard stuff, i think it will sound pretty good, im gonna wait to hook it up, because i know for x-mas someone will get me gift certificates to circuit city, and i will use that towards the purchase of an amp.

MTX Thunder6000's, i have alpine subs in the stang, and they are rated 200rms and 500w max, and these mtx's are rated 250rms and 5 or 600w max, and i think the alpines sound great, so i think these should sound just as good if not a little better.

I got mine off ebay for the same price. Maybe the same person. I wish I would have done it in the first place instead of wasting $300 on the Basslink. For the price, they are great, except you will get a little resonation from the plastic. Still worth it though!

My suggestion is go to a flea market. It will save you tons of money over going through crutchfield or a store like best buy.

There are a plethora of audio websites that will cut awesome deals on amps. Some of them are:

Sound Domain
Online Car Stereo
BuyLoud

I've got an MTX Thunderform under the rear seat of my Extended cab. Its got two JL 8s in it, driven by a Class D Subwoofer amp. MTX 4250D. You will definitely want to by a sub amp as they are more efficient. My truck is currently hitting 121 dbs. Funny this is you can't see any of my equipment when you look in the truck...hehe

P.S. This is a link to the amp I have. It is 350 watts into a 2-ohm load. My eights are only rated at 75 watts continuous but I have the gains turned down. This thing will drive two tens easily.

I have these in my Lightning and to tell you the truth,I hate them.I dont know what is wrong,I get like no base out of them.My stero guy says its cause its made from plastic,I expected ALOT better.I get twice the base from a pair of MTX 8s from circut city for $99;(

You have what in your L? Are you saying you have JL in the L or the MTX thunderform with MTX speakers. I've never heard a pair of JLs that were hooked up right sound crappy. Your enclosure may not be sealed perfectly. There could be many things wrong. What are you driving them with?

I believe 121 dbs is very healthy for a pair of 8s. I've been out of car audio for about 10 years but when I was into it 121 was a very respectable SPL, especially if 8s were making it.

I have the MTX thunderform box and I hate it.I even bought the best tweeters I could get to give it more sound level. They are just not loud????Believe me,Im not picky when it comes to stereo either.Ive had the same set of mtx 8s since 1994 and they sound way better than the thunderform box. It might be my amp I have a jensen. Its the one in the middle I think 150 watt??

I know you probally think right off its the amp cause its a jensen but The amp pushing the 8s is a jensen too!! Im lost but i spent good money and now im fuc%ed

Ok, I got you. Honestly, you may be underdriving those thunderform 8s. they require a lot more power than your Jensen has and your 8s from back in the day probably require a lot less power and that is why they may sound louder. Is your thunderform just not "Loud" or is it distorted as well?

Like I said, back in the day we used to build our own boxes out of MDF. I would've never guessed that two 8s in a pre-fabricated ABS plastic enclosure would ever hit 121dbs. Trust me, MTX has been a pioneer in car audio and there may be something wrong with your configuration. They spend a lot of money engineering their boxes and they are designed to sound great. Seriously, you may be underdriving the thunderform enclosure. Although I've got the gains down on my amp, I'm probably running a continuous 200 watts to two 8s that are only rated to handle 75 watts. You may just need more juice.

Lightningquick,

I would consider plugging up another amp, maybe a friend's, or just buy one that you can return...............I guarantee you it'll sound a MILLION times better.................The distortion levels you get out of a Jensen amp are mind boggling compared to others......The THD (Total Harmonic Destortion) levels are like at .20 to .30, where as Kenwood, MTX, and other amps are around .05, and even less. If you compare in percentages it's like 20 to 30% for the Jensens ....I remember having a Jensen mono 120W RMS into 4OHM load amp driving a 10" Bazooka in my old Accord..........it sounded awful......I replaced the amp with a Rockford Fosgate Punch 75, and it sounded like I had a pair of 12's back there.........it eventually blew my damn bazooka out, and I ended up having to buy a Solobaric box..........that's how good those damn Punch amps are........

I too, definitely think it's your amp causing the problem

good luck,
JC
