Cheap intake for those budget conscious owners!!
This system looks great but, it is too well documented that this style intake, as an open filter in the engine compartment, is really a double edged sword. It lets lots more air into the engine but, unfortunately it is HOT air. This is the air you don't want in your intake. Sorry for the downer guys. There are recent posts on this site and nloc about actually loosing hp with an open, unshielded intake like this one in the engine compartment. Save all your money....the stock system or a true cold air intake system is sure to allow your engine to perform better. Nothing negative is intended against Audio 18 here, the homemade unit actually looks cool and I am sure it sounds great. Oh well, your choice.

I understand the concern that some people may have with open filters. However, testing to prove this "power loss" can only be done on a dyno where (even with fans) you cannot truly simulate the airflow into the engine compartment that occurs when driving over 15 mph. Therefore, one can only compare the power differences through true 1/4 mile testing, which in itself is very difficult to compare data due to the numerous variables.
That being said, no one can say with certainty which designs are better.
The greatest improvements will be gained by adding a ram air kit to your intake. With any decent ram air the air forced upon the filter will be A) cool as the ambient air outside of the truck and B) traveling at the speed of the truck.
If you are driving 60 mph, then the ram air must be moving air at nearly that speed. With 60 mph air blowing on the filter, the filter will be overwhelmed by the cooler air. Since everything moves from HIGH TO LOW, the filter will pull in the air that is forced upon it with the greatest pressure.
As an example, if someone were to blow a hairdryer on your head. Do you feel the cool air around you or do you feel the hot air from the hair dryer? Ram air is the opposite temperature range, but the pricipal is the same.
I personally have dynoed 391hp/478 ft-lbs with a drop in filter in the factory airbox/chip/4# straight off the street with no fans on the motor. I am certain that with my new filter and a decent ram air setup, that I will net a few more hp and more importantly better results at the strip!!

Hey Audio18
Why dont you get some of the aluminium stock from Lowe's and make you a shield? I know they have the thin small sheets...like around 12 in by 24 in or something. And its easy to bend and fabricate that to make you a box. Would like to see what you can do with it. I was gonna do it until I ran across such a good deal from VINNIE !

Since Audio18 is a local buddy of mine and fellow TEAM PSP VA member, I would like to give him a big thumbs up for this mod.
His truck pulls REALLY hard for the mods. Last time at the track he ran 109 mph with only a chip, 4lber, drop in, and TR6's. His 60 foot was not there though, so it was only a 13.0 pass.
Since then he has added this Filter setup and a sweet 4in homemade cold air kit. I added some pinion angle to his truck, and I am sure he will run 12.50-60's next time at the track. Not to bad for less than $650 in mods....
Richmond, VA now has 3 Silver PSP powered trucks, and a few of those, "OTHER COLORS", lol.....

Thanks Richard!! You have been a great help recently with my traction issues.
Speaking of trucks that pull hard for their mods!! Your truck pulls like a freight train considering the minimal mods that you have done, not to mention it sounds like one too.
So all in all your truck is just bada$$.

Audio 18, I am trying to make an adapter like that for my 95. but my MAF is smaller, I need one that has an opening of 3.25", do you know is the make one of those dust hoods in that size? And where did you get that pic from? Great info.

A huge
And I'm not sure if I agree 100% with this new theory that open air filters hurt performance. The new Cobras show gains instantly with an open air filter and I thought the same applied for the Lightning. Next, take a look at your front grilles, how big are they? How much air do you think is rushing through those grilles at speed? I would think a lot. Look at a Mustang grille compared to the Lightning, the Lightning has much more surface area and more air flow. Also, think about this, mid summer day, where is the air hotter, next to the black top or a few feet away.
That's just my opinion, I'm not sold one way or another.
