Oil Change

How many miles between oil changes. Currently, I'm
changing oil/filter every 3000 miles. Was wondering
if I could go longer between changes. Am running
Mobile 1 synthetic 5w30.

Well first off I would like to say Welcome to the board catchmario!

I have always changed the oil in my vehicles every 3,000 miles, give or take a few hundred... but with the Mobil 1 SuperSyn, I don't worry if it goes close to 4,000 miles. I would make my decision based on how the vehicle is driven. For example, if it sees a lot of stop-and-go driving or idling, such as city "traffic jam" driving I would stick with 3,000. On the other hand, if it is mostly highway driving 4,000 (or more) would be fine. I usually change the Mobil 1 in my L every 3-4,000 miles, although some people argue that 6,000 is fine. Just check it regularly and pay attention to the color of the oil and use the color and mileage as an indicator as to when you should change.

Oh yeah, stick with the Motorcraft, Purolator, or K&N oil filters. Avoid Fram. Also fill or "prime" the new filter with oil before installing to avoid a dry start.

Good luck!
Sammy

What Sammy said----except, I would disagree with "oil color" as a gauge of its worthiness or need to change. Synthetics do a better job of 'cleaning' and may get darker with just a few miles but still be effective in protecting the eng.

Good point Dan. In the past I have used oil color as an indicator, but I have noticed the Mobil-1 in the L seems to darken after only a few hundred miles. In my '87 T-bird with a 5 liter (never used synthetic oil) the oil would appear clean on the dipstick for about 2500 miles! I thought maybe the L was just different in that respect, but maybe it's just the oil!

BTW, when are you going to get a pic of your beautiful L to put in your sig?

How can you drive 3000 miles in Hawaii other than stop and go.

Catchmario, I would agree with 01 Lightning, change it every 3-4000, though you live a bit from the city(10-15 miles) I bet your L gets a lot of stop and go driving compared to those on the mainland. Like Wendy said, where on the island can you go 3000 miles except back and forth with lots of stop and go traffic. Hope to see you at HRP soon.

3-4000 miles is fine, if you have to go a little longer once in a while you still should be OK.

The aditive packages in modern oils are a lot better than even a few years ago. So you can go longer than in the past, and color doesn't meen much, that shows it is doing it's job.

If you are getting close to 3000 miles and plan to hit the strip I would change it before hand. I change mine at the track all the time.

Also use the motorcraft filter.
