Winter Wheels

I'm trying to find a set of steel wheels 16x8 if possible to mount some winter tires. My Lightning is a daily driver and I need the added traction. I've tried the usual suspects. Ford will sell me the spare tire wheels, real ugly, American Racing wagon wheels don't clear the front brakes. Any help would be much appreciated!

yes yes, this is a problem for our trucks. i just picked up my wheel tire package from a friend i know that is a sales guy at discount tire. he searched for a steel wheel for a whole day that looked decent and didn't find one, the one he did find sure is it ugly. there are some out there that could fit but you would need wheel spacers. tire rack only has 1 wheel that fits, and it's $$$. instead of checking wheels for an f150, you should try expedition, because they are the same lug pattern. i ended up getting the spare wheels for the expedition that fits mine. any thing 16x8 or 16x7 will fit fine.

winter tires/wheels

I could'nt find anything that looked decent at a reasonable price.
I just decided to get (4) of the "spare" wheels , 16x7, and I got Bridgestone "Winter Dueler" tires in size: 255/65R16. These are almost the exact same diameter as the F 1's so there's no problems with the speedo or ABS system. From what I have read , these are about the best "winter only" tires out there. I used them last year but we really didn't get any real snow around here. I just put them back on yesterday anticipating a big snowstorm that never showed up. they seem to work/ride OK, but the truck sure looks weird/ugly without the stock rims on it. I just hope that we don't get too much snow this year, This things got no traction on dry pavement, I hate to see what it will be like in deep snow. Sorry this was kinda long, I get carried awy sometimes.

Been There.......Done That

I was looking for a set of winter wheels/tires for my Lightning back in 99
After I figured what those wheels/tires cost, what my deductible was, and how much the people driving cared about my Lightning.....I figured that buying a WINTER BEATER was Way Cheaper

Well, I have a set of used 17" aluminum f150 wheels with the stock goodyear RT/S's (about 31" tall - from a 4x4) and I have zero problems with abs. Of course the speedo and odo read slower, but that is less miles on my trick in the winter, hehehe

Oh, and they worked just fine in the snow yesterday in chicago.

I got a free car for the winter. It's a pathetic 1990 Geo Storm. But hey it works, is reliable, and goes really well in the snow. I got to test it out yesterday and it went well. So for just the cost of insurance I don't have to worry about my nice car getting messed up.

I realized after I bought the winter wheels/tires that I would have been better off just buying a "beater" for the winter but I already spent about $700 so I just dealt with it last year. I'm keeping my eyes open for a winter beater this year. If I see something cheap/reliable I'll have to snag it. I work at an auto repair shop and sometimes a customer would rather junk a car rather than fix it, sometimes you can get a car for cheep and fix it up cheep, that's the plan now,if I can find one. I really hate driving my L in bad weather. Good luck to everyone who has to drive their trucks in the winter.
