IAC went bad

Ford finally found the problem with my truck. The IAC needs replacement. I need to know what kind of problems this causes, and will I see a loss of power? I thought that there was a problem a while ago and never took it in until recently. It seems a bit sluggish in comparison to a few months ago. So basicaly, will a bad IAC rob power???

I just had mine replaced for cold start problem. The truck would not go through the cold start cycle in the morning. It started, and would not rev up and idle higher until it warmed up. Also, it caused a rough/high idle sometimes.

I took a look at the part that they removed. It was FULL of sludge and carbon. Probably a byproduct of all the oil being introduced into that area bu the PCV system.

I didn't notice any loss of power.

The IAC only affects your idle. Should be no loss of power anywhere else just a stumbling, searching(rpm) idle.

I took mine off the other day and soaked the interior with Sea Foam Carbon Cleaner solvent.

Cleaning this thing is very easy.

First you unplug the IAC

Then you remove the IAC (two 5/16" bolts)

Then you spray WD-40 inside and work the valve back and forth with a flathead screwdriver.

So simple even a child could do it!

Very common problem on the old 5.0's. Just spray it out w/ throttle body cleaner and it's ready for another 100k miles.

Did that in my last f-150 @ 50k miles and it worked great (used carb cleaner spray), was thinking about checking out my L's though, she doesnt start as instantly as I would like

I wasn't having any problems, I just saw this thread the other day and decided to check mine... I did spray a shot of WD in for good measure!

I dunno if WD40 is a good idea or not actually. The carb cleaner dries up better and I use a compressor to blow out any excess as it is. The only reason I dont think WD40 is great is because I know that it leaves a residue behind. I dont even use that stuff for cleaning bearings in my skates because of the sludge it can make once it gets dirty again. Just a thought...

Very true, however I did let it drain and blew it out before reinstalling. I have used it in the past with no problems, but I am sure I will pull it back off in a few months to check it again. The only concern I would have about using something such as carb cleaner is that it may clean the thing TOO good, causing the little valve to bind due to NO lubrication.

"she doesnt start as instantly as I would like "

Konig: I would suspect worn plugs as the cause of the above more than the IAC.
