Hitch / towing question
The truck i am looking to purchase (02) has a "trailer towing group - class II"... what is this?? This is the frame mounted hitch???
I looked at the window sticker from my 99, and it says clearly a class III hitch - which is the frame mounted hitch.
Any help?

The class just refers to the max weight it can safely tow. Class 3 is good up to 5000 lbs, I think class 2 is 2000 or 3500. Most class 3's will be a frame mounted receiver, like the F-150's. There are some class 2 frame mounts, but alot of them are bumper hitches. Most of the class 2 frame mounts are for cars with light trailers.
The towing group could just be the basic wiring (probably 4 plug, not the round 7 plug) and possibly some extra cooling.

so if they state that if it's a class two on a lightning, then they are speaking of the bumper hitch. i just want to straighten this out before i purchase the new truck. the invioice states that it has "trailer tow9ing group class II".
if anyone doesn't have a frame hitch, does your sticker indicate that you have a class II towing package???
this is the make or break decision on purchasing this truck right now. there are only two true blues (new) left in the nation, and both have front plates (YUCK), no bed cover, and this class II towing stuff.
please help.

Hi Phil. Sorry I didn't call you this morning but things are a little crazy in the car plant today.
Every piece of literature I can locate on the 2003 Lightnings states that they "ALL" come with the trailer towing hitch / class III.
So maybe the dealer you talked to made a mistake on reading the invoice, or maybe its a misprint. It should have a class III hitch which is capable of towing 5000#.
Hope this helps.
Marc
