Question First Oil Change

I'm doing my first oil and filter change on my new L at 3k miles and going with Mobile One. My question is does using Moble one allow to go more than 3K between oil and filter changes? It seems to cost twice as much as Dino oil. Your recommendatons would be appreciated.

I drive pretty easy compared to most Lightning guys. But I run 10w-30 mobil one w/a pure-o-later pure one filter and change it about every 4500-5000 miles. (good mix of interstate and city)

I went with Amsoil full synthetic and an Amsoil filter at 1,000 miles. Amsoil makes a full syntetic in the proper 5w20 weight that Ford recommends... buy direct from them. That's pretty much the only full synthetic I have found in the proper weight. And their tests show better performance than Mobil1 (and lest you think I'm ripping on Mobil1, that is the only oil I had been running in any of my vehicles for over 10 years). They have been making synthetics longer than pretty much anyone so I would imagine they know what they are doing!
Check it out at www.amsoil.com
Oh, and I have not had any pinging or whatnot that some have experienced on their first oil change.

War Eagle: See my sig for my oil. 38,600 miles now and no noises or eng. problems. I change the RP around 6-8,000 miles with 80% driving on the interstate which burns the condensation, acids, etc. out because the oil stays at operating temp. long enough. If you drive around town mostly, then a 5-6,000 mile change would probably be better. The extra $$ are cheap eng. insurance IMHO!

Mobil 1 has just come out with a new product recommended for Fords 5w20 specs.
It is Mobil 1 0w20, no joke, zero w 20. There was a link to the mobil site which had a closeup of the product, can't find it now. I have been using the Mobil 5w30 becasue that was as close as Mobil came to Ford recommendations. I also use the Purolator Pure One filter and am going to change to the 0w20 next oil change.
Street and freeway mix about 50%, change every 4500 to 5000.

been running 10w30 for a while now. Still replacing every 3k though. All seems to be running great even though ford recommends 5w30.

I changed to Mobil 1, 5W-30 at the 6000 mile oil change; had 6920 miles on it when I put it into storage Nov 3.

Many owners on this site maintain that you should hold off switching to synthetic until 8000-9000 mi to allow rings to fully seat, etc. I chose not to wait as it also seems many owners switch from dino oils very early-on, with no problems.

I can tell you I had no problems after my switch at 6K mi. At least, none at this point. 900 miles on the current change may not be enough to tell, but I doubt any issues will arise. Also, no "marbles-in-the-can" problems, either.

I have used Mobil 1 10W-30 in my '97 4.6l ever since 40,000 miles (a little after purchase); it now has almost 106,000 miles and no oil issues whatsoever. Yeah, it uses a quart between changes (5000-6000 mi), but I figure if an engine doesn't use a little oil over time, something is amiss.

I have always stuck with the Ford 820s filter, which seems fine, except the base ring gasket has a habit of wanting to stay on the engine boss...be sure to check that it's removed before installing the new filter.

I plan to change the oil in the Lightning every 3000-4000 mi, not because I figure it really needs it, just because I want to give her the best treatment I can.

Also, save your store receipts on the oil and filters for documentation that maintenance intervals have been followed if you ever have a warranty issue with Ford.

i change my oil at 500, 2500, 5500, and almost got to at 8500 before it was stolen! but i did not use Mobil 1 until 5500. and i still would have changed it every 3000 miles. it is better to be safe than sorry, not like it is THAT much of a hassle, or even that much money to change your oil!
