Cams
Do you guys know if there is anyone that makes a cam for the lightning and also do you recommend a certain duration for a daily driver with intake, chip, and exhaust. Is there anything else I would need to get with a cam to make it run better? Do you know how much they run.
Thanks

I know Modmax has some camshafts for our trucks, but last I knew they weren't out. Someone here has done some testing with some regrinds and found gains to be minimal, around 11 horsepower if I remember correctly.

On those modmax cams are new camshaft gears also necessary? How about valve springs? If new valve springs are also needed are the mod max springs okay to use again? I had heard they were having some problems with them.
Mod max part numbers?
gear lh 390-25200
gear rh 390-25201
springs 305-25002
cam shaft ?

For example I purchased the modmax valves which turned out to be ferrea valves. PSP recommended that I go with the mod max springs. I called and talked to Johnny and he recommended I stay with the stock springs. I'm happy I reused the stock springs because there are couple of guys here who installed the mod max springs and had to remove the heads again due to spring problems. Now I f I purchase these mod max cams will I have problems with the mod max springs, or do I look for another brand of springs and hope for a better result? Should I just stay with the stock cams and save myself money?
I went through the same dilema with a torque converter earlier this year. I had the engine and transmission out of the truck and decided to put in a converter. I went the cheap route and purchased an Art Carr 2400 stall converter because it was only $599. Boy, did I learn my lesson on that one. I could have saved myself $599 and shipping, the R&R of the tranny, and my time by sticking with the stock converter.
A heavier or I should say a higher rate valve spring is important on a modded truck. The stock valve springs only have about 70lb of seat pressure wich is Ok for a stock engine with a stock shift point but when you run the boost from 8lb up to 16+ lb's then you need more valve train control than a stock spring can provide. When you have twice the boost pressure pushing on the back side of the intake valve it will cause things to get a little crazy in the upper RPM's. The valves will bounce easier and that in turn will let the hydraulic adjusters pump up and the engine just wont pull very hard on the top end.
I have the mod max springs in my truck and we even put a shim in there to bump seat pressure a little more. Even with the stock cams it is a little close to coil bind, but DAMN does this engine rev hard and I'm sure the springs have something to do with that.
I wish I had a dual spring setup cause it would offer more protection if I did happen to break a spring, but that is really the only reason that I want a dual spring. Engines have been getting along just fine with a single spring for a long time, so maybe I'm just paraniod.
I got over 2400 pretty hard miles on the springs now and no problems. If I cant get ahold of the dual springs springs that I want then the Mod Max springs will stay in there......who knows maybe Mod Max will come out with a nice dual spring. Dale

modmax cams ARE available, but when i ordered mine the guy said that it was his last set to go out but now it should only take 2 weeks to order more instead of the usual 4-6 months, or however long it was. as for springs, they recommend buying new ones cuz they say that the old ones will bind up becuase of the aggressive lobe, yes you need new cam gears to replace the press on ones on the old cams. hope this helps.
btw, if anyone has installed their cams yet, they should post a sound clip cuz i havent gotten around to installing mine yet and im dying to know what it sounds like!!!!!!

The original ModMax springs had a production defect in them, where the manufacturer had left a winding mark on the inside of the spring. This was an area for stress cracks to form. ModMax said that 4 people broke springs out of the thousands of sets they sold. I was one of them. ModMax made good on what wasn't even their fault, and took all the first run springs back from everyone who bought them. I had personally sold three sets myself, and called the customers and got them back before they were installed. ModMax has since hired a different spring maker to handle the current springs they offer, which have been trouble free and are currently being used my many of the top modular racers.
Well, since the Mustang GT heads/cams/springs are the same as the Lightning's, I can answer a few of these questions.
ModMax Springs/retainers/keepers: Yes, these will be needed if you go with any cam duration over stock. The OEM springs can barely handle the 510/531 lift on the stock set, and will bind at anything over that. Most of ModMax's cams revolve around a 550 lift set, and that lift at the rpms we run, will start floatin the followers in the heads, and make a real mess of things. Yes, they did have a handfull that experienced breakage from the first production batch. But mine ran flawlessly on 550/224-226/112 cams with lash caps. Never an issue...
ModMax Cams: Pick your poison. Gains are dependant on modification levels.
Cam Gears: The cams now have bolt-on gears, so Yes, you will have to purchase new cam gears from Ford to install on the setup. Give Randy Stinchcomb at Universal Ford in Baltimore, MD a call. He is a great Mod Racer, and gives great prices to all Ford Modular customers. (tell him Joe in Orlando sent ya)
ProPower Performance in Ft. Lauderdale, FL (as Tim suggested) or www.modularperformance.com (Mike Tymensky) are both awesome sources for ModMax components, and parts consultation.
good luck,
joe
