My bolt is "eating oil? WTF?

Changed my oil Spetember 19th w/ Mobil SuperSyn 5W30, took the truck to get the tires rotated and they told me it is 1 quart lower than normal. It ate 1 quart of gas in less than 2 months. I checked the dipstick today in the morning, and it is in the minimum!! I have an appointment for tommorrow to ake it in. They said they would do an oil consumption test. Some engines have been leaking in the passenger side right? I have not seen any oil in the cats or smelt anything. WTF is going on? Could the oil breather cap cause the oil to evaporate? Where else have all of you seen any leaks?

When you changed it, did you crank the engine (to get oil into the filter) before you checked it? That could account for about half a quart.....

Ï put all 6 quarts in. Whn the oil is checked it is supposed to be with the engine off right? It is in the minimum when I checked in the oil dip stick Can someone shed some light before I take it in tomorrow? I don't seem to seed any by the passenger cat where everyone had been reporting as leak between the cylinder head and the block

Brasil, good luck in solving

your problem! Was this done at dealer? filter might be loose? I and others recommend only putting in 5 1/2 qts to keep oil out of intake.

After I fill it with 6 quarts it will be in the middle on the dipstick btwn min and max. After i start it and let it idle for 30 seconds to fill the filter, and shut it off - it reads MIN. So I add half a quart. 6.5 total. I use a breather cap and don't get oil in my intake.

You could check your plugs for any signs of burning oil..........

JBL, they recommend a total of 6 quarts right? (incluiding filter change) It is not normal for the oil reading be at the minimum after two months right?

Welcome to the club!! Most all L's use some oil. Its either in the intake or blows by the valve seals on startup. If you have less than 10K and you went to synthetic, its more likely that you using alittle oil. A few have got new motors because of it, most just deal with it....

two months is irrelevant. how many miles has it been? You could drive 30,000 miles in two months or you could drive 1000 miles in two months, that is why the mileage is the important number.

According to Ford (the last time I checked anyway), if a vehicle uses 1 quart of oil in every 700 miles, this is considered NORMAL oil consumption. any more than that is excessive, but anything less that is normal.

To me that is excessive, but I'd say that 1 quart per 1000 is acceptable.

BTW, what type of oil do you/ have you been using?

Also, in an "OIL CONSUMPTION TEST" all they are going to do is change your oil and note the position of the oil on the dipstick, then tell you to drive 700 miles and come back and check the level. If you are still in the range on the dipstick and haven't used over a quart you are "normal".

later,
chris

If you installed a crankcase breather and your PCV hoses are still connected and functional, it could cause excessive oil to be sucked into your intake.
I do not have a crankcase breather and my L uses no noticable amount of oil. I am NOT saying that the breather is DEFINITELY the problem, but it is a possibility.

Good Luck!

I thought oil breather caps were for reducing oil in the intake, at least on mine it was...........without it the pressure is what pumps oil into the intake.

Eliminating the PCV system will elimiate the oil in the intake, after which a filter should be added to the cam cover to allow the pressure to vent.

If a filter is added without disabling the PCV system, during high vaccuum the air will flow through the filter into the cam cover where it picks up oil and enter into the intake.

I am not claiming to be an expert, but I think I am right on this one.

just curious how long has your truck been using oil, or did your just notice it recently?

also, have you been using synthetic since new?
